Forums - Sony Discussion - What Would Be Your Reaction If Sony Announced "True" PS3 Backwards Compatibility?

Largely a waste of resources to do individual compatibility porting of PS3 games given SCE already invested in PSNow and that most of the biggest PS3 games are seeing PS4 remasters.

Naturally, this is not ideal for consumers like myself who have close to a hundred PS3 retail games and over a hundred more on my PSN account, but it's not as though I play any of those old games anymore. It just means I need to keep at least one working PS3 in storage for retro gaming.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming this is what MS Xbox is doing.

I'd turn around and notice a pink hippopotamus doing my taxes.
Dreams are nice.

Even though I didn't own a PS3 or any last gen console, no. I'd really much rather if they remaster all the great games (really happy that they remastered Uncharteds, TLOU, GoW3, Flower, Journey, GTA V, FFX/X-2, Tomb Raider)

I mean, I know buying last gen games would be much cheaper, but I want those updated graphics, performance and game mechanics. I want to experience those games I missed last gen in their best form.

I understand the PoV of people who did own a last gen console, but I don't simpathize with it much. If I were you, I would never get rid of my PS3 (I still have my PS1 and PS2), just for the nostalgic value and if I wanted to play some of its games. It was just 2 years ago that I dusted off my PS2 last time to play GoW2 and FFXII again. Yes, it would be very convenient to not have to plug in your PS3 every time you want to play a last gen game, but it is something I could live with just fine considering I'd be too busy playing current gen games to play games I supposedly already played, again.

Here is hoping someday we'll get FFXII, FFXIII, Infamouses remasters and other great games I never got to know about.

“wow, Sony makes a bigger and more expensive version of the ps4, which includes ps4 hardware. I never expected that“.

It's exactly what MS is doing.

But due to the differences in architecture between the XB360 and the XBO, which despite the SoC design in the interest of reducing silicon required and energy to power it are both X86 architecture vs the differences between the PS3 and the PS4, it would require quite a bit more additional programming per title being ported.

I'll go and buy a Ps4 now! Then I can still play my Ps3 games that I haven't started. And can begin buying some sweet new Ps4 games!

It's not impossible and it wouldn't cost nearly that much. The tech behind PS1 and PS2 is ARCHAIC and the PS3 tech is 10 years old. The whole thing about PS2 BC being cut from PS3 to save money was a lie and one alot of people bought into.

I know this sounds like I'm bashing Sony or some Sony hater, but I'm not. I just believe holding companies to their word and Sony said BC would live on forever.

If you think it is possible for a PS4 to play PS3 games then I do not know what to tell you. PS1 and PS2 is possible though

It's not possible as is, but it was possible before they shipped the thing. They COULD have designed it to include PS3 BC from the get go, but chose not to.

It is possible ALA the MS method without any changes to hardware even now. But it would cost Sony more for a feature the mainstream doesn't really care about, the PS4 doesn't need (as it doesn't currently need additional features to sell it), reduces software sales (remasters) ((even though the number of remasters that actually make a bit of money can be counted on one hand))

Including PS3 BC via hardware would've made the PS4 DOA, either crippling it to Wii U power levels (many internet ppl say its was too weak on release already) or over pricing it, for a feature nobody wanted kinda of like Kinect ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Its intresting to note that Like PS3, the XB1 was slaughtered till it rejected that extraneous mandatory feature (PS2 BC/Kinect). I still chuckle at the praise MS recieved for flipping the switch on the Kinect (after they spent the entire Summer saying they couldn't just flip a switch) faster than Sony removed the internal "PS2", despite one requiring a complete hardware revision and the other well the other require a switch to be flippped, (cord unplugged). But I'm getting really off-topic here...That's none of my business ( ͡( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ͜ʖ ͡( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°))

So it wasn't really an option.

its useless to me cause i will still use my PS4 for PS4 games and PS3 for PS3 games since i still have a PS3, but its good that i don't have to buy another PS3 if it suddenly die...

anyway i'm starting to play lesser and lesser PS3 games now a days, think i'm going to ditch 7th gen soon...

What I read at neogaf that PS3's CPU is really powerful. So much so that its difficult for PS4 to emulate it; since a generation gap in power is needed. But if they manage it then it will be awesome.
