Omg are you guys just kidding around or are you seriously thinkin spencer made that comment to stop people from buying ps4? 😁 get real, last npd was close, they have all the reason to be confident with their product and lineup and I'll guarantee he's not sitting in his office looking at amazon charts.

So you think they don't track sales?  Almost constantly. Phil Spencer wants to sell as many consoles as possible.  They have data points In place to track all shipments.

Crazy how far the Xbox bundles are falling
Looks like halo is going to be the only game to help Xbox this year.

Rare replay, gears remaster, Forza are all out but none of those seem to be helping.

Maybe closer to Christmas or a price cut is needed.

Great to see TLOU:R still doing great behind PS4 Destiny TTK & PS4 Star Wars BFIII

Those expect ting even Forza 5 sales from the new Forza will be disappointed I think. Forza (and realistic and futuristic racers in general) make good launch titles for filling that "showpiece" slot. Not only can they be made relatively easily made, they are also easy to make look very good and show off. As such they are the type of game to do well at launch. But Forza has been overused so much that now, without that advantage, it can't grab the attention needed to sell. As a launch title, it was the high-quality show piece. Now, it's drowned out by other Xbox exclusives, competing companies' exclusives, and multiplats.

Problem is they had such crazy deals last year anyone wanting to buy an XBO would probably wait, and I think thats the problem in doing a firesale and then putting it back up. Phil is probably trying to get people to think the same will happen with PS4.

Cutting the XBO's price by another $50 is dangerous because MS just did that last year. The last thing you want to do is to condition consumers to expect an annual price cut. In addition, last year the XBO went from a $399 to $349 with two games, which was further reduced to $329 on Black Friday. That is a huge jump in value and a jump that will be difficult to match, even if you do cut the price.

Not to mention Aura-San that, upon doing so, more than likely they will lose money for each Xbox sold even more so. Personally, I believe Microsoft should ride this holiday out looking more so for profitability instead of sales leads. 10 million is too much to make up for; doubly so since Sony's 2016 line-up is stacked.

Did the price drop comment backfire?

It probably did in a way no one expected. Phill said that if Sony does a price cut, that they are ready to respond. So that might have put some  potentiel Xbox Buyers to wait for the "response" lol

You sir hit the nail on the head.  They've already conditioned consumers to expect them to be $50 lower than PS4 (which means they have conditioned them to expect Xbox to be $50 ahead of the natural price reduction curve, thus assuring that they lose money on the console).  The last thing they need is to condition them to expect them to be even further ahead of both of those curves.  It wouldn't help their sales in the long term all that much and would seriously impact their already weak bottomline.

But they're not looking to make up 12 million. They have written off the rest of the world and their only real goal is to win in the USA and maybe the UK, which continuing to sell better than dismally everywhere else other than Japan. So they only need to make up ~900K in the USA and ~400K in the UK. They know they can't do that with price parity. And any bundle MS can do Sony can do at least equally well, or better. Bundling isn't going to help them. If it's not $299 this year is will definitely be $250 next year.
