Forums - Nintendo - 3DS & Vita Can Last For Another Two To Three Years In The West, Says NIS America Boss

It's weird.  He talks about both 3DS & Vita in the same sentence in the OP, but the title is only about 3DS.

Anyway, both consoles have games lined up for 2016.  And I could see the Vita lasting beyond that with localization stuff, just like PSP did.

Glad to see this is a roundabout way of him admitting that NIS America are still planning on working on 3DS & Vita games, though.

May want to let him know. NIS has been treated very well by the Vita audience.

Sure the 3DS can last for a few years... besides the NX handheld. Especially if the NX-handheld ain't backwards compatible to 3DS.

The lack of exclusive announcements for the New 3DS speaks volumes, even Xenoblade Chonicles is now available on Wii U. Why aren't they pushing the new 3DS model with some exclusives? Probably because the preparations for the NX-launch are much more important than broadening the New3DS-hardware-base.

As the new 3DS was announced many people with ... let's say not so friendly feelings about Nintendo claimed, that 3DS-owners now are fucked as any new software is released for new 3DS now. More reasonable people said, that N3DS-software not runnign on 3DS would be the exception. Look how it turned out. And if you're wondering how that can happen, look at the DSi, that as the N3DS had more processing power. How many exclusive games besides the downloads the DSi had?

But if it's a DSi situation (a minor final revision upgrade before the launch of the next generation, not the second coming that postpones the successor of the 3DS-line for at least 4 years), a NX-handheld at the end of next year or early 2017 is highly probable. The 3DS launched 27 month after the DSi and 14 months after the DSi. Outside of Japan the gap was even smaller: 3DS launched 25 month after the DSi and 12 months after the DSi.

Let's just ignore the DS LL for a moment. The NN3DS/LL launched in October 2014... 27 month later would be around January 2017. It launched in November 2014 in US + EU... 25 month later would be also around December 2016 and January 2017. Probably  1 - 2 month earlier to not miss out on the important holiday season, so my guess is November 2016.

You say no significant releases for N3Ds are announced, and from that you conclude the NX will replace it. But you omit, that there are a lot of significant releases for 3DS (that also run on N3DS) are announced. That somehow hurts your theory.

Are there significant 3DS releases announced for the time after November 2016? That would hurt my theory. And even the earlier 2016 games aren't a mostly impressive output of 3DS games... Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (I love the M&L RPGs!), Hyrule Warriors Legends (a port), Bravely Second: End Layer (already finished besides translation) , Metroid Prime Federation Force (not the Metroid game the fans were looking for) and the usual Olympic Mario&Sonic sport game.

Yeah, I always assumed the N3DS as comparable to DSi and therefore the 3DS getting a successor at the end of 2016 or the beginnign 2017. Your calculations with January 2017 or December 2016 pretty much match that. And seeing your answer, my criticism that you only looked at N3DS-exclusives was inconclusive, I wasn't critisizing the assumption that NX will replace the 3DS/N3DS (I think the same), but the assumption that the N3DS counts as a console of it's own that replaces the 3DS.

The games you name are the ones I had in mind too mostly, and I think of them as a good final lineup for the machine. Probably we will see some more games into the lifetime of the successor, as Pokemon B/W 2 came out I think even after 3DS.

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [GTA6]

If we are talking about small scale publishers (such as Atlus or NIS) then yes I feel as though the 3DS and Vita possess receptive audiences and can last another 2-3 years. In regards to Nintendo themselves however, I feel as though the 3DS can only last another year or so. And looking from what we are seeing with NX that looks like the route they are going to take.

Changed the title to include the Vita. . I think he's right though, 2 to 3 more years sounds just about right, overall they had a pretty good run.

I dunno about Europe but the vita is already dead in NA, and the 3DS looks to be on its way out everywhere.

Besides, its best to release a successor before the previous system is totally dead. The ds lived on for a good year or so after the 3DS launched.

I can see Vita lasting 2-3 more years in JP though.

2016 is still big, for 2017 software output, I don't know. But if a Pokemon or MH would be released on 3DS and Vita getting more games, then they should be fine 2-3 years down the road.

Due to mobile phones, I think the hardware sales won't spike up that much unless there are price cuts with new bundles.

Vita is europe sold not too bad. It's less than japan, but more than Us (not really hard...ahahah...).

But i think he's right for Vita, it will probably last for a while, but the 3ds, i don't know, depend on what the NX is.

He may be right after all. The 3DS surprised me... back in 2014 I thought it wouldn't survive 2015, but they announced some important games that filled the year. Next year things look even brighter for it, there are tons of important games releasing in the west. I think it can hold itself until early 2017.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

PS Vita sales are better in Europe than PS Vita sales in Japan according to VGChartz.
