Forums - Microsoft - Gears of War Graphics Comparison: Ultimate Edition vs. Xbox 360

Hindsight is mother. I can't believe that GeOW was ever a benchmark for "best graphics".

Great work on the Ultimate Edition, though. Good to see it isn't just a higher polygon count

Gears of War 4 doesn't even look like its going to push the kind of graphics that Killzone Shadowfall reached (which is only the start for Sony). Its sad, but yeah...Sony is going to pull away in the graphics dept as the gen moves on. Better multiplats and exclusives as far as graphics goes. Regardless, Gears is my favorite Xbox game and i've never played it for graphics. :)

It's a remaster, a very good remaster. I don't think we can call this a remake.

Remaster = Using original assets and up grading them

Remake = Game made from the ground up and stays faithful to original (imagine MGS1 on current gen consoles with current gen graphics same story/missions/etc and overhauled gameplay)

Reboot = Complete new direction set within the franchise. Usually going back to the start with change of story and drastic change in gamepley.

How about this...

If they overhaul the graphics we'll call it a remaster.

If they just improved the resolution, frame rate, and do other simple tweaks, that's called a port.

Really nice improvement. Good to know they worked hard on it so its not a money grab. But I prefer for remasters to cost $30.

The whole game was remade from the ground up. All assets just like Halo 2.

Well Halo 1 and 2 Anniversary Editions are basically the original game engines with an enhanced graphics engine running over them. Which is why you can switch between original and new graphics in those remasters.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume this Gears Ultimate Edition is using much of the original code and has been visually overhauled. There are also new features and modes though, so they did make changes but I wouldn't say it was done from the ground up.

Bottom line, a lot of remasters are just ports. I think calling Gears Ultimate a remaster is fair but some products don't deserve to be called such when they're clearly just ports.

Check out the Gears of War making of video. They talk about it there. It was remade from the ground up and they said with the head director there it was actually much easier to recreate than they had first thought. The basic genius of Gears is is that its a simple game which the developers gave the look of a technical marvel and this put the developers on edge at first. Not so much anymore.

Looks insane. Love the richer color scheme and darker tones.

good thing they name it as Ultimate Edition and not Remastered, or else more people would expect this is how a Remastered game should be, since everything was rework from the original and not simply upgrade the resolution and frame rate which is what a Remastered means

This is how you "remaster" a game. I hope other devs learn their lesson from this one.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

GoW:U has been built from the ground up, and is very faithful to the original (bar some artistic changes), so i don't see why we wouldn't consider it a remake. It is worth noting though that being "faithful" isn't a firm requirement for something to be considered a remake in the first place. The literal definition is just "to make again or differently".

Reworked from the ground up yes, but they are still using the same assets. The levels are the same, same buildings, same cutscenes, same story same everything. They've added things and improved upon everything. This game wan't made from scratch. It's a remaster and how remasters should be done.

It's a remaster. Check every product description on any website. Check the GOW website. They have a comparison before and after remaster.

It's not a remake.
