Forums - Nintendo - What is the worst case scenario for the NX?

X-post

NX will be released as a handheld with with 540p screen and Tegra3 chipset for 250$. This device will be too weak to connect to a TV, so we need a dedicated home console and Nintendo overclocks the WiiU to 1.5x the power (like Gamcube to Wii), because it worked so well in the past. Home console will be 350$. Cross releases will take month, if at all, and you have to buy both versions. The WiiU will be discontinued except for some shovelware to milk the remaining customers. Amiboos everywhere.

The worst case would be if it's another system with absolutely no thought put into it, relying on a gimmick that nobody asked for and that nobody knows how to take advantage of, underpowered and overpriced with no third party support, thus once again completely worthless to anyone that isn't super into a large number of Nintendo franchises, overall still just way behind the times and if it would still be successful even if only moderately, prompting Nintendo to continue with that strategy.

Best case scenarios would be if either the NX is a system as described above that crashes and burns for that reason, leaving Nintendo with no choice but to either completely revamp their hardware branch or just leave the hardware business altogether or if the system is truly good and worthwile (meaning either truly innovative in a useful way or doing as much as the other systems and more in terms of games and features) and successful for that reason.

If it's not a big leap over Wii U, still not that easy to develop for (compared to PS4/X1/PC) and priced too high.

If the first two things are wrong then it doesn't matter if it's more than $200.

PS, PS2, Gameboy Advance, PS3, PSP, PS4, Xbox One

Named wii U 2.
Goes RROD.
Big third party support announced then cancelled.
500$ price tag and still less powerful than PS4.

Considering it is a console and it really gets released, i think, the worst case scenario would be even worse sales than the Wii U.

Playing: F1 2016 (PC), Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)
Watching: Hajime no Ippo, Attack on Titan (4th time)
Upcoming purchases in October:
-TBD

The worst case scenario is if it doesn't get the full support of all teams from Nintendo. Its what killed the Wii U. If Wii U ended up with all 3DS/Wii U games, most would likely consider it among the greatest consoles of all time. Nintendo can't afford to segregate amongst their own devices. And if NX doesn't allow for easy porting between handheld and console, then it will most likely be bad for Nintendo.

Lack of horse power... Nintendo has tons of fans, but lack of horse power would mean that :

a - third party support will be similar to what the Wii U has at the moment
b - many people who have ps4s or xb1 will not see the point in getting this console

Oh if they have a bad gimmick that people are forced to buy alongside the console (like Kinect on the original XB1 plan or that stupid gamepad with the current Wii U) make these optional if it raises the price of the machine significantly.

The worst case scenario would be:

At the moment of release.
-As powerful as the PS4, but based on an old achitecture. Hard as balls to port to.
-500€ pricepoint.
-Weird gimmick that alienates hardcores and casuals ignore
-The name of the console is the Wii X.
-Online multiplayer hidden behind a pawyall.
-Terrible marketing.

3rd parties run would run away from that thing as quickly as they possibly can. Nintendo has to fill the library of a PS4-like console all by themselves. They are stuck with a powerfull machine whose power noone really use. Nintendo has to make an emergency pricecut, but unlike the 3DS, the WiiX is not a handheld, and it doesn't work. They abandon the console after two years of struggles and losses. No more home consoles, just handheld, mobile and PC.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

If it doesn't have something cool like the Wiimote, Gamepad or 3D. :p

No ofense but that would be a disaster.

The best way to do this console imo would be to use Nvidia's Tegra X1 chipset and have it run in passive-cooling mode while being used as a handheld on its 720p screen.  Then when plugged in, it connects to a fan that allows its clockspeeds to double and 1080p gaming is now possible.

Plus the Tegra X1 is twice as strong as a PS3 so it would at least be a bit better than last gen - esppecially if they overclocked it a lot in Console mode (Could be about half as strong as an Xbox One then).

However we know that AMD is making this for nintendo, so best case scenario imo is they do what I just said with an overclocked Puma+ chipset (Which should work just as well as the Tegra X1 if not better).

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.
