Forums - PC Discussion - Are the "PC Master Race" days over?

Looks better than ever for PC. Console manufacturers pay only for console exclusives and not full exclusives anymore, MS releases all their games also on PC and is investing a lot more in their studios and even Japanese studios release more and more games on PC.

The next 10 years look great for PC gamers.

all you hear is non stop 4k this and that even tho almost all pc gamers dont game at 4k 60fps. next gen consoles will be 4k 60fps and i can assure you the visual settings will be high and not low. if you can buy an all in one box for 499 why get a pc if games is the only thing you need?

someone tried to build an xbox one xs using off the shelf parts and it came to £1300

... for some titles.

Others will have 4K 30fps, others will have 4K with variable refresh rate (30 - 60 fps), others will have dynamic resolutions below 4K with 60 or 30 fps or VRR, others will have checkerboard "4K" with 60 or 30 fps or VRR...

Visual settings also will vary. Some games will have raytracing, others will have no raytracing...

1. Big PC gamer here. I have what was a top of the line video card (1080 ti) from a couple years ago. I can generally run what I want in 4K, or slightly below (forced 1800p usually works) at max settings. I'll consider an upgrade in a couple years.

2. I didn't realize that people were actually being serious with this whole PC Master Race thing. Always seems like it was a talking point brough up by console gamers critical of PC gaming.

3. I feel that PC gaming is in the best position it's ever been in. We have access to a MASSIVE library of games across a number of storefronts. Both microsoft and sony have shown they are willing to release their "exclusives" on PC. And of course multiplat games are almost always best played on the PC. Plus the fact that it's more open, letting me do great things like (legal) emulation, etc.

I do have a PS4 and a switch, but I'll almost always get a multiplat game on the PC, except for certain situations where the portability of a switch just makes more sense.

Most next gen game won't be 4K@60fps, 4K@30fps is to be expected in the beginning for publicity reasons, later in cycle that will drop to dynamic res @30fps.

1080p to 4K UHD is massive resolution jump, much bigger than 7th to 8th gen jump and currently AMD 5700 GPUs drop at some 2.3x on average when going form 1080p to 2160p with same settings. Even if take into account better efficiency of current AMD GPU tech when it comes to infamous FLOPS, they are still quite way of the needed mark for the same jump we had in 7th to 8th gen, after the resolution penalty.

Devs will always try to push as much as they can, and in most cases resolution is safe bet to get cut early on - which is quite fine actually, dynamic upscalling has come a long way.

Short answer, no.

Long answer, no but the things that fueled the meme have mostly become a thing of the past.

PC Master Race became a thing all the way back in 2008-2009 when we had the PS3/360. Both of those consoles had a horribly small amount of space dedicated to RAM as well as other issues that just made them go obsolete on a tech level very quickly. Maybe if Sony hadn't bothered with Blu-Ray, used a more traditional CPU, and included at least a GB of RAM things would have been different.

PS4 Launched as kind of underpowered, and XB1 launched with Kinect making it awful from a price to power perspective. You could almost build a PS4 quality PC for $400 back in 2013. Almost. Meanwhile the PS5 and XB1SX are rumored to be launching at 2080 levels.

It wasn't until XB1X, and PS4 Pro that consoles stopped being insanely outdated on a tech level. IMO consoles are still very outdated, but it's not as bad as it would have been if Pro and 1X hadn't launched.

On the PC side of things we've had the Epic vs Steam store war, which has hurt PC gaming overall. Also Steam sales just aren't what they used to be.

The PC Master Race meme will never truly to away, but with consoles not being quite as obsolete, store wars hurting PC gaming, and Steam Sales not being so hot, it has lost the power it once had as a meme.

Other than an increase of whiny gamers, how has this hurt PC gaming?

Emulators alone make the PC the most extensive and complete platform.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

EGS has always online DRM, meaning that once the servers for a game go down your game is unplayable. So you are forced to choose between an always online DRM version of a game, or waiting a year for it to finally hit Steam.

Also, it's really inconvenient to have multiple launchers. GoG, or Steam, or I'm not buying your game.

PC gaming has been on the winning side in the past 4.5 years. Microsoft has stopped to make most of their games exclusive to Xbox, so now all of them are coming to the PC with day and date releases; Game Pass is also available for PC gamers. Numerous smaller Japanese developers have not only ported their games to PC, but nowadays it's more common than ever that their games release simultaneously on consoles and PC. Sony is also looking to release games on the PC. Lastly, with Nintendo joining the fray of online subscriptions, PC gamers are now the only ones who aren't asked to pay a second time for something that they have already paid for.

Meh, it's just MLB, IPs that Sony never truly owned, and making games available on PS Now, which isn't really PC.

PC master race is a myth. Don't waste your time with stuff like that.
