Forums - Gaming - Virtual reality is an official succes

I wouldnt call it a success just yet, we'll just wait and see when its released and how long its actually support. Kinect and Move werent supported very long,so we'll see how long VR actually is

VR doesn't really exist yet. What counts as "VR" now is laughable at best. At the present, I don't agree or disagree with him, mainly on account that the technology isn't out on the market now or in the foreseeable near future.

have you tried any of the recent VR prototypes?

sure, you want Matrix/SAO style VR, but what we have now already is a much bigger step into that direction than you seem to realize

Not the recent ones. However, it doesn't make the direction they're moving towards any less wrong.

HD gaming wasn't too important at launch of the Wii. Hell it took me about 3 years after the Wii was released for me to get a flat panel 1080p TV. Before that the prices were too high and I settled for my CRT 720p (component) TV. I believe it made the Wii look better compared to the flat panel (jaggies stood out more on flat panel). Anyways HD gaming is important now because the technology is now mass market. Everyone owning flat panel 1080p TVs didn't happen till about 2009-2010.  Wii sold 100m+ so I don't think they made a mistake not making it more than 480p with component cables.

Funny you bring DVD/Blu Ray argument considering DVD players were cheap when the Wii released and Blu Ray players were cheap when the Wii U released.

Still it's hard to argue DVD and BD playback it didn't help the sales of the respective PS2 and PS3 especially for PS3 blu ray was a big deal in it's early years. I still hink the Wii should have at least supported 576p, but it did shorten it's life span by not being a high def console. As someone who owned both a PS3 and a Wii the difference between R&C TOD and Galaxy where already big and my god those on rails aphelion battleslooked so good on my plasma screen. A company musn't just look at the situation at launch for all specs (for some they need to), but looking ahead is key and Sony is trying to do this with VR, as they co-invented blu ray which two consoles use (Nintendo prefered a similar technology because Nintendo).

Some things fail like the Vita, but VR is looking good for this moment.

I don't think you know what VR is.... don't worry, I can help you out! V-R stands for "Virtual Reality". So with that new knowledge, you can now see that VR is out next year with loads of games ready to go.

You're welcome!

Watch who you're talking to. Anyway, reality is defined as "the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them." or "the state or quality of having existence or substance.". As it stands, VR tech like Oculus or Morpheus don't truly accomplish those. When I wear a VR headset I don't believe what I'm seeing exists nor am I any more immersed in the world. Instead, I just have full camera movement with my head -which is more limiting than analogue sticks. The concept itself suffers from many many many issues that prevent this technique towards VR to evolve into something bigger. VR this way would involve the awkward 8 way treadmill I've seen some people use among other things. It's too clunky and people are buying into a dead end road. It's a glorified Chuck-E-Cheese game helmet. Nothing more, nothing less.

Threats to prove a point, really...

Anyhow you might think it isn't a lot of people think it is and I think many here will agree with me when I say that with the right software a truely immersive experience is possible with these headsets, especially if you add move to PS Move to Morpheus. That mag game for instance ad move with that game and I think it is a great experience and deserves the therm VR, games aren't meant to be real because otherwise you would need an environment suit and electrodes all over your body a game needs to be a game and VR (headsets) can improve the experience by greater immersion.

Blu ray was so expensive when the PS3 was released that the PS3 was actually the cheapest blu ray player.  It made no sense to buy a regular player considering they were 900-1000+ (plus some of those early blu ray players didn't have internet capabilities and when blu ray went through some updates it left those early adapters screwed).  Sony had PS3 at 500-600 I believe but were taking huge losses on it.  PS3 was a great system but it hurt Sony for the first few years pretty bad.  It later was able to make some money (not sure if they got all the money back) but even though its going to end up selling 87 million or so it didn't help Sony's financial books as much as the Wii helped Nintendo.  Nintendo bet wrong on an idea that had them more focused on the gamepad for the Wii U than helping the overall specs of the system.  So Nintendo lost a lot of the Wii profit money on the Wii U and now are trying to squeeze as much money out of it as possible in order to try and recover the losses before moving to their next system.

When VR gets to the level of Sword Art Online (if it ever does), then we can talk about VR. Right now I consider the current VR like I do the Kinect... A novelty that I'll have fun with for a short period of time before I go back to my standard way of gaming.

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC

Being condescending isn't something I'll tolerate. It wasn't a threat either nor was it to prove a point.

VR is meant to be real, hence reality in the name. It's a pointless gimmick like 3D otherwise.

the direction isn't "wrong", it's an inevitable first step towards what you are dreaming off

we actually know hardly anything about the brain, so creating the VR world in your brain and interacting with it with your own thoughts is far off, but the research towards that will only get really heated once the screen-VR is a big market and shows it's limitations

I'm not dreaming of anything as the way they're going about it won't work. As you said, brain research is next to none, we know more about the universe than the brain at the present and so proper VR is far from existing. The hype for VR won't be what catapults research in neurology though, it'll be smaller individual things in medicine. I wouldn't expect any sudden revelation in gaming to occur in VR until at least the 2030s.

Anyway, lets agree to disagree if you do.
