sure, you want Matrix/SAO style VR, but what we have now already is a much bigger step into that direction than you seem to realize

Not the recent ones. However, it doesn't make the direction they're moving towards any less wrong. 

the direction isn't "wrong", it's an inevitable first step towards what you are dreaming off

we actually know hardly anything about the brain, so creating the VR world in your brain and interacting with it with your own thoughts is far off, but the research towards that will only get really heated once the screen-VR is a big market and shows it's limitations
