Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Fans Need To Be More Realistic About Their Expectations Of Wii U/3DS

Meh, it is what it is. I don't really expect much if anything at all beyond what's already announced. As long as I get Zelda U, X, and SMT x FE, I'll call it good. And if Zelda U comes out as a cross-platform or is moved completely onto the NX altogether without a Wii U version, well, guess I'm getting a NX. I'm well-satisfied with stuff like Bayo 2, Mario Kart, and all the little stuff the Wii U does. Since I got my PS4, I've actually played the Wii U more than the PS4, even though I'm pretty well satisfied with PS4 as well.

I think it needs saying... because people seem to be in denial about it.
Its looking like this gen, for nintendo will be shorter than people expected it to be.

I just think that it would be bad if they think that more console power is going to fix their sales situation. It won't.

Animal Crossing on Wii U could easily sell 1 million in Japan alone if it was bundled

That. Two animal crossing games coming is huge. I mean the franchise sells better than zelda (individual games not total franchise sales ofc)

I'd take it a step further and say Nintendo fans need to have realistic expectations of Nintendo in general these days. Every year they expect Nintendo to deliver the stars and the moon to them, and every year Nintendo disappoints by a mile.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

It could, if it he console was simular enough, for there to be no reason for 3rd party not to support it.

That means they have to go with x86, GCN, and gpu about as strong as the xbox ones.

Or they could make a weaker console, still faster than the Wii U, thats sold alot cheaper than the wii u was.....

which means not useing a gamepad as a controller.

But yes, more console power generally means more sales.

People always want new and better. If you can demonstrate the use for it, and its priced right.

Yes it's Nintendo's fault, they made many mistakes with the Wii U, but what's done is done.

Most of the whining/complaining is coming from people who are online industry savvy and know the business more than the general consumer.

You can't realistically expect Nintendo to support the Wii U as well as the Wii or even the GameCube (which really, hate to shatter your memories, Nintendo actually abandoned with their core teams after 2004).

They supported the Wii U for this long and didn't abandon it sooner so people weren't pissed off that their purchase wasn't worth it and wouldn't buy another Nintendo console.  So far I'm not anywhere near getting my moneys worth from my Wii U purchase.

I don't give a rats ass about the sales, going by that logic no one should buy another Nintendo console until it starts selling well or else it might get subpar support, oh wait but then no ones buying it and it sells like shit.

This is a bit of a hyperbolic statement.

The Wii U actually has more 1st/2nd party titles in its first 3 years than the GameCube had.

Realistically there's a limit to how much Nintendo can support a platform that is selling this poorly.

I think it's less of a "we could sell more on x platform" and more raw numbers concerning what money Nintendo can spend and remain profitable. Nintendo clearly underestimated the money needed for HD development and with pressure from the shareholders to hit profits no matter what, Nintendo's budgets can only be so high. Smash had tons of cash tied up till end of hear last year. Same with MK8. XCX, Zelda, and SMTxFE have big budgets as well. If the Wii U had more sales and some kind of third party support, Nintendo could be more liberal with spending. I think this whole gen has suffered from this initial poor planning and lack of understanding of what they were getting into.

Well that's the other thing. They can't just be making like a high budget Metroid game just to make the very small Wii U userbase happy when development costs are so much higher today.

It's just not a realistic expectation.

The moment we saw sustained poor Wii U sales, people really should have known that there was going to be a real consequence to that down the line.

Expecting the Wii U to have the same level of support from Nintendo as say the Wii did is just not realistic. Especially when the games cost more to develop.

But I do think they have to allocate their big IP carefully too. An Animal Crossing game takes 3 years on average to make, if they just "waste" one on the Wii U, that means the NX won't get an Animal Crossing likely until mid-cycle, which is probably not something Nintendo deems suitable.

You both hit the nail on the head. Nintendo now realize that HD development takes more time and are most likely starting development on games for their next console/s so they don't have a repeat of the Wii U and 3DS launch's. Oh and going with common hardware and good development tools for their next system/s is a given if they want 3rd party support.

I only expected at least some amount of effort put into WiiU, something that I didn't saw.

Not a single game they showed during the whole E3 tells me it's an "A" quality game from Nintendo, except for Xenoblade, but that game was revealed two years ago and is already launched in Japan. All the other games looked to be "B" or "C" class games.

What they have shown is that they have surrended, and how much confidence does that inspire to you? Because it gives me 0 confidence on them.

Like I have been saying all along, NX 2016. The Wii U is on its last legs and will be replaced very soon.

Expect a unveiling of their mobile platform later this year at Gamescom or TGS, which are both much bigger and more important than E3.
