GameCube first party is overrated.

Mario 3D World >>> Sunshine.

Like seriously take off the nostalgia glasses with Sunshine, it's a terrible Mario game with bloated level design all set on a tropical island (who the hell thought a Mario game with all tropical themed levels was a good idea?), that had camera glitches and bugs up the wazoo and the back end of the game was piss poor.

Splatoon >>> Pikmin

These were the so-called "new IP" of the GameCube ... I'm sorry, Splatoon is way better. It's a far better game and truly the next great Nintendo IP. Not only that but Wii U has Pikmin 3 as well.

Mario Kart 8 >>> Mario Kart: Double Dash

Double Dash had a pathetic number of tracks, MK8 has far more content.

Smash U = Smash Melee

Smash Melee was the one big IP Nintendo got right on the GCN, but Smash U matches it IMO.

DKC: Tropical Freeze > DK: Jungle Beat

EAD Tokyo made a good effort here, but a "real" DKC game with actual controls the return of David Wise trumps a spin-off DK game with bongo controls.

If Zelda U is better than Wind Waker, then the Wii U has the GameCube beat in many major Nintendo IP.

you're crazy, some of those opinions are extremely subjective. in terms of scores and popularity almost none of the opinions you put on those Wii U games being better than their Gamecube counterparts are correct

both sales wise and rating wise you're off

the Wii U has some solid titles but they have a weak Mario installment (that's the reality, it's not even traditional 3D and therefore much less loved), a remake of Wind Waker (and no improving the graphics doesn't magically get tons of points, it's not a hard thing to do), and Pikmin is a totally different type of game than Splatoon so that is just a bizarre comparison. if anything it shows that the Wii U has such a limited library that you DONT have titles available to compare appropriately with even the Gamecube

the Gamecube has a great library and the only thing weak about it was sales. highly considered system in reflection by most people, it had good specs for its time, all genre of games besides maybe shooters, and a controller that made sense

obviously the Wii U is not even close to the worst system ever. Jaguar had NO library and this is coming from someone who has owned a majority of its library through time. Saturn was very one dimensional

currently I would probably compare the Wii U to the Dreamcast in terms of library, not great, not a ton of releases, its rather ehh

Even gamecube was prominent in the shooter genre. It spawned metroid prime trilogy, of which the first game is one of the best games of all time.

Rol was right, you guys truly do value a Nintendo system if it meets only three criteria:

1. "Real" 3D Mario.
2. "Real" 3D Zelda.
3. "Real" 3D Metroid, preferably of the "Prime" name.

Pretty funny.

More like people are looking for 3 good games to compete with other systems. Even having ONE of those games would be enough, but so far there have been none. Had xenoblade chronicles been marketed heavily, I would have been fine with that replacing one of those 3 (during the wii saga) in the list. Same goes for wii sports replacing one of those 3 (not wii sports hd since the appeal is gone).

Metroid prime only spawned from gamecube, so I wouldn't even classify it as a must be present on every Nintendo system.

Mario Sunshine's graphics underwhelmed even in 2002, no one was saying "wow! what a visual showcase!". Mario 64 looked great for 1996, Mario Sushine not so much by 2002.

Mario Kart 8 (and every Mario Kart since) doesn't use the double rider gimmick from Double Dash, because it was something no one really gave two craps about.

Pikmin was a short ass game by the way. Splatoon will grow over time.

GameCube gets put on a pedestal on this forum because of the age demographic here, most people grew up with the GameCube and see it through rose colored glasses. I remember the actual reality for what it was.

And actually selling only 22 million units when the system was $99.99 for half of its product cycle is fairly pathetic. Even the Wii U probably could match that or even exceed it by a bit if it was $150 (inflation adjusted) for the back end of its life cycle.

Nintendo totally screwed up with Mario Sunshine (Mario on Vacation!), Wind Waker (cartoony Zelda!), and ditching the multiplayer blockbuster FPS formula (GoldenEye) for the solitary, bordering on depressing Metroid Prime experience and thinking that would take its place.

Mario sunshine was not the end all be all of graphics, but it did demonstrate an advancement in water physics, which is something to 3d worlds nothing. To top it off, the game had greater exploration and puzzle segments.

In terms of mario kart and the double dash feature read this:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04/03/mario-kart-double-dashs-dual-racers-havent-been-forgotten

clearly they thought double riders was a cool mechanic, but surprise surprise, the wii u processing power held back that development (among other things)

Again, pikmin is a puzzle/exploration game, and splatoon is cod with cute graphics. To compare the 2 would be very hard to do. If you do want to make a comparison, compare pikmin to the other puzzle games at the time, and splatoon to other shooters of its time, and you will see how short on content splatoon really is (even with all the dlc factored in).

Wind waker and its "cartoon" style is still considered one of the best zeldas, the wii u doesn't even have a zelda game yet. Sunshine at the very least was a good attempt at a 3d mario game, the best the wii u has is the 2.5d 3d world.

The gamecube get put on a pedestal because it had the games to back it up. Don't believe me, tell me which system had the better hardware for cheaper at the time? And while your at it, please tell me which game ended up with 2 metroid primes, an f-zero game, semi-decent 3rd party, Animal crossing, 2 zelda games, luigi's mansion, and paper mario, among others

The wii u has good games, but let's not suddenly pretend that it deserves to be placed higher than past Nintendo consoles when the wii u library clearly seems to be the weakest out of all Nintendo consoles.

I don't agree that's it's "clearly" the weakest.

IMO both the GameCube and Wii are really overrated by Nintendo fans here.

Wii U has several key Nintendo IP that are better than the GameCube or Wii, and Splatoon is the best new Nintendo IP in probably 20 years (sit down Pikmin, there's a reason why you're a B/C-tier Nintendo IP).

GameCube was a massive let down, aside from Smash Brothers, Nintendo's basic philosophy on the GameCube was "lets take everything people like about their favorite franchises and COMPLETELY CHANGE IT FOR NO REASON! You liked Ocarina of Time? Now we're cartoon shading Zelda! You liked Mario Kart, now we're make it a dual rider game that no one asked for! You liked Mario 64? How about a Mario On Vacation game with only topical levels! We'll give you a Donkey Kong game ... that you can only play with bongos!".

Not everyone thinks GameCube was the greatest thing since sliced bread. There's a reason it only sold 22 million even with the benefit of being $99.99 for half its lifecycle ... it was a massive let down after the N64.

Sorry but no, the library is much better than gamecube.

Gamepad is great when utilized properly. Sadly, only a few games do that.

Yes, we do know if Zelda is coming to Wii U. I thought you were being realistic? They've said it over and over again. At worst, it will be crossplat, but it will not skip Wii U.

Mario Kart 8 is arguably the best Mario Kart ever made. Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover, Zombi U, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 are all exclusive games that are wonderful. Splatoon is a new and awesome IP introduced to us through Wii U.

And let's not pretend like indie games don't matter. There are a ton of good and even great indie games on Wii U.
And as far as old games being announced and Nintendo fans getting excited, well as a fan that hasn't played Mother yes! I did get excited. What's wrong with that? Did that really make your day sad? It brightened the hell out of my day.

The virtual console is one of the best things on Wii U!

I play my Wii U far more than my Xbox One or PS4. I have 233 games, and most of them I enjoyed the hell out of. I've had way more fun with my Wii U than I ever did with Gamecube.

Nintendo also introduced us to Miiverse with Wii U, something I don't think they plan on leaving behind. And I wouldn't be surprised if their next console has a controller with a touchscreen as well.

@everyone
I think you guys should not use a semantic loophole and say "Well, X console by an obscure company is worst" that is like me saying that "My little brother made a console and that one is worst than Wii U." I am talking about "serious" console creators like Microsoft, Sega, Sony and Nintendo. I dare anyone to say that the Wii U is better than any of consoles made by any of this companies and you will see how the Wii U stacks up poorly even against the original Xbox or the PSone.

Atari is an obscure company? Ok then.

How can you put 'Worst Console of ALL TIME' in a title, then not talk about all consoles in all of time? It makes no sense. And you can't say that other companies were not serious. Atari was a founder of gaming but don't want to include the Jaguar? Are you serious?

I heard the Jaguar was a pretty advance system... Truly ahead of its time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlRWqqWay7c

lol the worst part is that they used 2 32 bit processors and called it 64 bit. There was a major difference between the Jaguar and the N64.

That 's my favourite kind of maths.

"several key Nintendo IP" - where are they? gamecube had metroid, animal crossing, 2 zeldas, 3d mario, luigi's mansion, eternal darkness, f-zero, 2 3d pokemon games, fire emblem, and more, does the wii u have those?

Splatoon is a decent new IP, but compared to animal crossing (gamecube new IP), metroid prime (gamecube spawned), wii sports (wii new IP) and xenoblade chronicles (wii new IP), calling Splatoon the "best new Nintendo IP in probably 20 years" is laughable.

Yes, I will call the wii u library the weakest out of Nintendo consoles when it is clearly missing many games and IP that the others had, no not just b/c tier games, I'm talking about metroid, animal crossing, 3d mario,...

edit: it seems you have a personal problem with the art direction of wind waker and sunshine, and while I feel bad for you, I do acknowledge that they are still critically acclaimed and beloved by its respective fans to this day

No, but it's Nintendo's worst for sure. What a shitty hardware, joystick and software support.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

The N64 didn't have Metroid, either.

The low point in Nintendo consoles for me would be in the holiday season of 1997, when Nintendo had absolutely nothing to offer after Goldeneye launched in September, so they had Rare slap together Diddy Kong Racing. Just six months or so after Mario Kart 64 came out. The only third-party offerings they had were Snowboard Kids, Chameleon Twist, and a hockey game from Midway which was barely updated from the one Midway launched in 1996. The Wii U has never had anything quite that embarrassing.

Oh, yeah, they did have Madden 64, so they did at least have EA Sports on board. Except that EA could only get the license from the NFLPA and not from the NFL itself. So instead of the Patriots vs. the Giants, you had Foxboro vs. New York City. LOL. It would have honestly been better if EA had skipped the N64 with Madden that year.
