You are correct. The story is entirely different than any other Starfox game. This one is just in the same universe and timeline of 64.

Yeah, Titania did look hugely better than Corneria or Zoness.
It's certainly no visual showcase, it still has some months left for optimization, so the final product may exceed what we've seen so far.
