>3D comes out in games (and movies)

The public: "THIS WILL REVOLUTIONISE EVERYTHING!"

3 years later: "Eh, who cares."

It seems like 3D went from being essential to being a choice that nobody really cares too much about. Gives people headaches, often feels shoehorned in, makes things more expensive, etc. People often skip 3D movies because the extra ticket price isnt worth it and there's barely any 3D games outside 3DS. 3D tv hasnt really  caught on either.  Not to mention it is still quite clunky.

>Motion Control comes out in games

The public: "GAMING WILL CHANGE FOREVER!"

3 years later: "Oh dear lord please dont let this have motion control."

Motion control went from being a peek into the future of gaming to a mostly opitional control scheme that's massively hated. It's hated so much that both Ninty and Microsoft got screwed trying to push it. MS more than Ninty, hilariously sadly. Motion control and the fancy pants "No controller gaming" of Kinect is something tonnes of people want gone completely, which is a far cry from when it came out. Not to mention it's still quite clunky.

>Virtual Reality comes out in games and "social networking" (thanks, Facebook.)

The public: "THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING"

3 years later: ?????

So will VR become a passing fad or somethig that clearly came out too early? Or will it really cement it's place in the future of gaming and media?

I'm kinda leaning to passing fad. But we'll see.

Sure. In the end, we always want simple ways to play, not complicated and uncomfortable.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I think VR is just more applicable to more things though (read: porn, general computing tasks, even virtual movies) whereas motion gaming really didn't have a lot going for it beyond just games ... and the games it was mostly good for were generally shallow types of experiences so it's not exactly stunner that people eventually moved on.

VR is bigger than just gaming.

As technology gets better, it'll get cheaper, the glasses will get smaller/lighter, and the experience of it will get better and better too.

VR will be more applicable in other fields. I don't think it will last very long in gaming, especially for the price they are going to be selling for.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

I certainly say so

Oh man... VR porn is gonna change the world :)

I'm going to have to say yes. I think they will be fads like both motion and 3d gaming was, but we'll see

You forgot simulators (not the gaming type), for example if you want to train an employee in handling some special piece of equipment, and for example tourism. You could go to places otherwise impossible, imagine 'being' on the moon etc.

Yeah, VR is not just gaming.

You're right in that this is different from the others in this way.

I agree that it will branch out really quickly, but I think it's futur in gaming is still quite limited.

Also, Poll added, because I finally know how to do that. And it only took me a year!
