Forums - Gaming - Things you HATE about JRPGS...

JRPGs are a fascinating genre. Some stick to their classic roots, while others have changed the formula over the years. They are a genre that has slowly evolved over the years. JRPG is one of my favorite genres, but I can admit that there are aspects and design choices that often annoy me to no end. I'm here to list some of my grievances and encourage you all to list and explain your own as well!

**This thread is mainly for those who like JRPGs, but have issues with some fo the conventions. If you don't like JRPGs, this thread is not for you, so please don't bash, just for the sake of bashing.

Disclaimer: This is not represented by all fans, just myself.

Here we go:

1) Save spots- When JRPGs have points where you have to go for a long period of time without saving your game. I understand the need to not save in certain locations, but when you go into a long dungeon with cheap random encounters that can one shot you, there goes all that time, wasted.

2) Random encounters- I might have played too many newer types of JRPGs, but when I went back to play FFX, the random encounters sometimes drove me insane, especially in areas such as the Calm Lands. This annoyance is heightened now more than ever to me.
--Subset of random encounters-- I also hate when JRPGs have some kind of screen right before a random encounter. It might not feel annoying at first, but when you continue to get random encounter after random encounter, it starts to add up; especially if the encounter takes some time to load.

3) Backtracking- Some JRPGs are guilty of this feature where they make you go back and forth between quests, or the main story just to deliver a quest, or move along the main story. Some of the biggest offenders I can remember were Lost Odyssey and it's Temply of Enlightment. Seriously, the dungeon itself was a pain, but after you beat the boss, you had to go back through the whole dungeon just to get out of it.

4) Spilting up the party-  When you've reached a certain point in a JRPG and the game decides it's time to split up the party. Removing one, or a bunch of characters. I understand how it can hold plot significance, but to me it breaks up the flow of the game. Especially if you have good equipment attached to them, or you lose your main healer.

5) Too many party members- When a games gives you 7, or 8 party members and you can only use like 3 of them at a time. The worst part being the idle characters never get any experience, which forces you to level grind. *Surprisingly enough, I don't have an issue with grinding in JRPGs, I find it relaxing and fun to be hoenst.

6) Minigames in JRPGs- I cannot stress to you how much this annoys me. When JRPGs put minigames into the game as padding to the story. Some are good, but most are infuriating to me. Controls,  camera, difficulty, etc.

7) Pacing when it deals with the best weapons and armor...- That moment when you get the best weapons, equipment by the end of the game, and you got nothing to really use it on. Another thing I hate about JRPGs.

8) Missables- This right here is probably the most annoying for me. When you miss a certain action, which can't be undone. Most of which you wouldn't think to do without a walkthrough. ie) Tales games where you have to go to some random inn and sleep for the night to get a conversation with the main characters, or a title.

I know I'm missing other hated aspects of JRPGS, so I'll add them in later if I remember. These are some of the aspects of JRPGs that I hate. I'd like to hear your own thoughts on things you hate about JRPGS.

Terrible voice acting. Casts being comprised of teens. Terrible voice acting that does not have the option to be turned off.

I don't mind random encounters, if there is eventually a way to reduce or void them (FF6/8), but I would prefer if games were set up like Chrono Trigger or even Cross. Random encounters really help with grinding. I wouldn't even mind random encounters ala SMT Nocturne.

Hi

Very interesting thread! I had never really ruminated on this subject before now.

From your list, numbers five and eight are the most bothersome to me.

For number five, it's frustrating when a few unused party members are doomed to lower experience levels. Now, number eight is frustrating also, although it's not unique to role-playing games. Missing some essential conversation or location can be devastating, especially if it sets you on an unwelcome path. I remember I said the wrong thing at the wrong time to Leliana in Dragon Age and missed out on a romance. I'm still bitter about that

Characters that leave the party with THE STUFF I EQUIPPED THEM FUCK YOU MOTHERFUCKERS I HOPE YOU GO TO HELL WHEN YOU DIE YOU FUCKING THIEVES.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

I never really had issues with JRPGs honestly : ) My biggest gripe has to be random encounters for some games. Sometimes they are way too frequent, which drives me crazy, but some times they are balanced.

Also, another thing. Rare random drops. Having to farm from that rare powerful item can be very annoying and draining to do...

Whatever the 2nd half of Bravely Default does, that was outright terrible, but luckily only applies to that game. Aside from that not much trouble with JRPGs : ) They're just so great...!

Hmm. I guess for me is the underage looking female characters. I know that they think it's fine but I don't like teenage girls. haha. I'm pretty much fine with everything in JRPG's old and new.

I hate them only if they are in a language i cant understand

Towns -- I'm over towns. I'm tired of towns. They seemed interesting once but I wouldn't mind if I never saw them again outside of the base.

Oh, I have to run around and make sure I talk to everyone? Alright. Now I have to come back and talk to all of them again periodically just to be sure because sometimes one of them will have a quest I might miss? Yay. All the shops are split up so I have to run back and forth between them and deal with loading screens? Awesome.

Been there and done that. Now I want a hub.

The most recent game to piss me off with the whole separate towns thing was Dragon Age: Origins, where I had to go to different cities to get different gear while dealing with random encounters in between. Such a complete and total waste of my time.

8 and 4, are real issues.... aswell as nr 2, to some extent.
