^^ Great point Mornelithe, not to mention there are also marriages where sex is impossible due to medical reasons, but they love each other and want to be a part of their own 'family' in the way they see fit.

In fact, I'd say in many marriages sex quickly has little to do with anything, lol. *da ding ding boosh!*

While I agree with you and Mornelithe this really shouldn't change into a thread debating are gays against nature/god, my country has been debating that back and forth for the last number of months and this thread is about the fact that Irelands population went to vote on how we felt on the matter and went as the first nation of people to vote for marriage equality in our state.

Da debates over for us for now thankfully :) LGBT couples have every right to marriage that Hetrosexual couples do here.

Really really hope the message of Irelands changed population from the old fashion view spreads to couples around the world who might already be married but now know that Ireland is a welcome place for them to visit or for people who might have immagrated away from 80s Ireland now know that their home has changed for the better.

Neither Arkaign or myself are turning it into a debate about human nature, or fictional boogie men.

When the hell does marriage have anything to do with having a family? Couples that never marry can have a family and it does not make it any less legitimate than a married family (Whether A same sex couple or opposite sex couple).

Or be like myself and my wife, married 5 years almost and don't have kids. Our marriage vows never said we promise to pop out some kids as a part of our union. Think a lot of people who want to "protect" marriage should probably at least understand what it is first heh.

Exactly. In your case, your marriage is just as legitimate as a married couple with kids or a non married couple with kids (same sex or otherwise). It's about giving everyone the equal right to choose as they wish.

@bold, Thats the words we voted in basically :) Had a lot of the No people trying to say that gay people already had civil partnerships so they should be happy with that and not want marriage because it was the same.... but when I asked what difference it would make in their eyes if a same sex couple could be married there was no reply.

Most basic way I looked at it was if you considered Marriage as Coke and Civil partnership as Pepsi, as a hetrosexual person being allowed to choose which brand you wanted but if a lgbt person was to ask for a coke they were handed a pepsi and told it was the same thing as coke so they should be happy with it, realistically at the end of the day allowing LGBT couples to enjoy the same choice of what relationship they enter with each other doesn't spoil the taste of my coke at all.  (and as a side note I had to correct the spelling of "coke" about 20 times while writing this paragraph.... because you don't just go up to someone and hand them your coc..... !)

As I postulated, Christianity is now dead in the West. The family has been betrayed by people of my generation and younger. The same caucus that voted in Obama in office twice who is now tearing the US apart from within.

A sad day indeed for those who believe in family values and the social order of the universe. But the fight will continue. Praise Allah.

I agree.  Instead of allowing this abomination against the almighty Allah, we should have traditional families like the prophet, blessed be he.  We should have a dozen wives, between the ages of 40 and 9.  We should also force girls to be engaged at 6 cause the prophet likes to pick em out when they're young.  You need some time to mold them, you know?  Just ask Muhammed... and Woody Allen.

Sad day indeed and against family and human nature.

So who gets to define what a family is in this day an age? You?

I would argue that witholding the right to marry from gay couples is in itself 'against family'.

Not trying to disrespect you, but this is none sense. How could gay couples form a family when they can’t have children? Being gay is against human nature and this is reality. Men and women together is the natural instinct of human beings, while Gay marriage is an atrocious and obscene act which belongs to unsound nature. Marriage does not mean sexual enjoyment only but also the establishment of a family on hygienic and safe foundations.

You don't need to have heterosexual sex to have kids, all you need is sperm, an egg, and a uterus. IV can take care of that; it's already helping many straight couples with fertility problems to have children.
And then there's adoption; many orphaned kids are sorely in need of a family.

If you're so scared of "unnatural" things, you'd better get off your computer, cos I hate to break it to you, but computers and the internet aren't "natural" either by that logic.

The "against nature" argument doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. Homosexuality occurs throughout humanity, across different cultures and epochs. It's a common trait in socially organized animals such as ourselves. "Human nature" is not limited to reproduction.

Human rights should not be extended to include human destruction and diverting from the human nature and the principles on which this universe was created.

Frank, Frank, Frank.......

The capacity to have children is not a requisite for heterosexual marriage so suggesting it should be for homosexual marriage is a blatant double standard. The incidence of homosexuality is strikingly similar across all cultures which is a strong argument for it being part of human nature. Something does not have to be the majority attribute in order to be part of human nature. Furthermore, what marriage has to do with nature, when it's a relatively modern construct, is beyond me.

Hygiene and safety have no part in this discussion, homosexuals don't to my knowledge have a plan to destroy the human race (of which they are a part) and the 'principles' which brought around the origins of the universe had little 'thought' for humans, let alone gender orientation.

You really need to think long and hard about this train wreck of a post, particularly before calling others out for nonsense. Your position has everything to do with your prejudice, pure and simple, and nothing to do with nature or human nature, which you evidently have little understanding of.

Same sex marriage has been legal in new zealand for like 3 years

Dude, it's the first country where the people voted for it, not by a courts decision.

Welcome Ireland to the land of Equality!

You do understand that Ireland was the firs to vote on this in the world, therefore, I'm not sure you have the right to "welcome" them to the "land of equility" seeing as the country already has a great record in this regard and....again.....the first where the people were allowed to vote on the issue. Maybe when the US catches up, then we can welcome you? Instead they leave it up to some old judge in the US to decide whats best for the people in a social matter. Then the likes of it being illegal in many US states for inter racial marriage until 1967, that would be just another example of how the US can't really welcome someone into this land you speak of, when clearly they are so far outside of said land, that's its not even funny.

So please, in future, think before patronizing or speaking down.

Hey, you are taking this way too personally.  I'm not putting anyone down.  The land Ireland stands on is now free from sexual marraige discriminizatoin.

Remember wasn' t until 1993 that it homosexuality was decriminalized. That's not very long ago at all.  That's a whole lot of progress for the people of Ireland.

All of the changes in the USA have come from grass roots groups, many of which I have help run and found for that 28 years.  Do you really think it would have won if not for the efforts and changes in the States and other Countrys the past 14 years?  Many of the changes have also come from the legistaltion system and not judges.  And it would have come much sooner if Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn't have been such a coward and go back on his promises when he ran for Govenator.

Same Sex marriage is legal Federally in the USA.  So it must be legal in all the state.  Currently, 7 states are still fighting it, but those would have probably still not allow interracial marriage or women voting if they weren't forced.  It's happened, and may finally be over by the end of this year.

But honestly, I think voting on civil rights is not a good thing to do.  They are fundamental civil rights which should not be up to the whim of the majority.   But as I understand, the only way Ireland could make this change.

And yet, in the US some states never legalized being gay or having a bi racial marriage. The courts had to force them to accept it. The whole "1993" thing is also nonsense. People were gay, that was that. The law just kind of stucvk around until Norris brought it up. Nobody was ever prosecuted and the antiquated law was just overlooked.

The vote was a good idea because it gave the majority a chance to stand up for the minority. IF they failed, then the courts would handle it. Would you prefer like in the US how the courts tell society how to live? It was in the constitution. People voted to change that. They didn't vote on civil rights. The people can only change the constitution. And to be honest, what you think doesn't matter. You live in a country riddled with racism, hate and war. Please try not to tell other people how their countries are flawed.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND, gay people already had equality. They could legally have a union. It's just that yonks ago, the constitution defined marriage as being between a man and a woman. LEGALLY.

I'll see your 7 goats and raise you 4 chickens. The woman is mine!! All praise hypnotoad.

Living under Islamic rule wouldn't be so bad. There would be sacrifices but at least there would be a new social order based on the natural state of things. Feminism would return to the principles of naturalism as intended. You would still be able to practice homosexuality but in the privacy of the home the way it was intended to all along. Don't ask, don't tell.
