Forums - Gaming Discussion - Prediction: A stronger Wii U would have won this generation

A wiiu needed a lot more than power to make it win... It needs a competitive price point which wouldn't be possible with the gamepad cause it will raise the consoles price to over $550. It needs marketing too which Nintendo goofed at a lot and many other things such as a better name

Power was the least of the Wii U's concerns. The major problems were that

1) Nintendo has never been good at gathering third party support, and
2) The Wii U's unique gamepad display made it hard for third party developers to develop for.

The result is that no one besides Nintendo developed for it and you can't sell a console with one studio alone. Power was never a significant issue; it's something forum nerds like us debate over, but is basically immaterial for the rest of the gaming world.

power is the reason the games wont get released. Already explained.

No it isn't. The PS3/360 still get 3rd party games and the Wii U is more powerful than them so clearly power isn't what stops it from getting 3rd party support. It's more to do with how different it is to the other consoles, and most importantly the fact that very few people actually buy them when they are made.

Ditto Ka-pi96. If power were the major limiting factor then would have seen a lot of the PS360's late-life titles because that's like porting downhill.

The real logic is that developers had no idea what to do with the gamepad, so developing for Wii U was more difficult and higher risk than developing for the more conventional consoles. And it faceplanted right out of the gate, so it quickly became less reward, too. The Wii U was just never the most viable platform to put a game on.

I am increasingly thinking that there is NOTHING Nintendo could have done to save the Wii U. Both consumers and developers are more risk averse than ever, which meant both waited for new hardware before making their minds up. Both the X1 and PS4 are strong or very strong consoles, which attracted the consumer base. The Wii U never had a chance.

That's more of a "hindsight speculation" in my opinion. I also believe OP is wrong; the Wii U's fundemental problems are core design and aim, not price, horsepower or software.

No chance.

The Wii U launching at a higher price, right next to the PS4 that would have been $100 cheaper, with no guaranteed 3rd party support?

Would have been suicide.

pretty much this. I believe that it would have been in a even worse situation than they are in now. At least now they are profitable.

Wii outsold the PS3 and xbox 360. It was the least powerful of them. It had 3rd party support for the most part.

Typically, sony's consoles dominates the console market unless it screws up. The wii's success was most likely a fluke especially if nintendo can't win any other generation against sony. There's nothing to suggest that the wii u would have won this generation if it was more powerful.

So I guess 3DS vs Vita and DS vs PSP didn't happen?

We can't change the past, but we can change the future

I don't think the Wii-U has lost solely because of it's hardware. Nintendo didn't lose third party support because of weaker hardware; they lost in because of a complete lack of interest in third party titles from Wii-U buyers. Another factor is Nintendo's poor online service that barely competes with Sony's original PSN model on PS3, in terms of features. That, and Nintendo's fear of upsetting mothers of America took their toll. Let's not forgot that a more powerful Wii-U would've costs significantly more, and it really wouldn't have paid off much, as most Nintendo first party titles have never had any real justification for crazy realistic graphics. What's already there suited their needs perfectly.

No. They totally have a lack of online-community support. How was that? “what does a Porsche help you when you don't know how to drive“.

Some of the reasons are I believe;

1. The wii while successful became seen as a poor console in retrospect not being able to compete with 360 and PS3 and missing out many important games or getting substandard versions. It became a niche console despite its huge sales.

2. The wii u lacked a amazing launch title that made people want the console. Later big titles came out but by that time the failure stigma had been attached to wii u.

3. The gamepad isn't very good to be honest. Not only is it over-sized for small children (a huge part of Nintendo's normal audience) but its lack of analogue triggers made it a retro step as a controller.

4. Nintendo hadn't made the console sufficiently powerful that it could outperform 360 and PS3. Most early titles performed worse on wii u than the older consoles and this would have been hugely negative to a wide audience. It really should have been something like 500 gflops for its gpu and something like a dual core x86 processor with a third powerpc core for wii mode and additional support. Something that would comfortable outperform 360 and PS3 even for launch titles. To simply have 3 low power ppc cpu's running at 1.25ghz made the console hugely difficult to match ps3 and 360 performance. Both those consoles are fairly cpu-centric.

5. The wii u was only really suitable for die-hard fans of Nintendo games for many of the reasons above and that simply meant it's potential audience was small.

6. Lastly weak hardware means its hard for developers to achieve much with wii u that hasn't already been achieved elsewhere. You can't really push gaming with such limited hardware. Something that really is now only doable with PC and PS4.

A stronger Wii HD with a realistic Wii Sports HD on Day 1, a new Wiimote and bring your own smartphone / tablet support could have won. The system should have been targeted to casuals and hardcore players alike with the ability to play all your old Wii games in full HD and Mario Galaxy 3 as a launch title.
