Forums - Gaming - People say PC games dont sell?? (Continued with more sales)

revenue > sales

just look at the highly inflationary Skyrim sales.

20m at $5 is as much as 1.67m at $60.
That means that the console versions (14m) made them more money than the PC version (30m+).
Further proving that for the majority of regular games (everything that isn't indie, MMO, strategy, social or F2P) consoles are far more important. Usually for non PC-centric games, the PC version is about on par with one of the console versions in terms of revenue.

That's fair, but that's still a LOT of money. The market is large enough to support day 1 releases for big multiplats, and that's why that kind of thing has increased a ton over the past few years from the really dark ages. Beyond 1st party and moneyhatted stuff, 3rd parties have every reason to release on PS4/X1/PC, and WiiU deserves more love, but honestly doesn't have the numbers to support a whole lot of ports :( But like the Wii before it, a fair portion of blame can be laid at the feet of the 3rd parties themselves for lazy or late ports that don't sell well there (or worse, spinoff low-quality or gimped version games masquerading under the well-known IP brands).

It's clearly evident PC games don't sell well, even if Steam tries to say otherwise. Look at Bloodborne, for example. Why would it be exclusive for a console? Because it sells more on such console. Obviously the community on PC isn't as strong as it seems.

Bloodborne is exclusive to the PS4 cause its a Sony IP lol
Its a game that would have happened with or without Team Miyazaki from From Software. They created they IP,the concept and asked Miyazaki if he wanted to work on it.
Why would Sony think about a PC Version for this game? This is THEIR Game and not From Softwares Game.People need to understand that.
Its like saying "Why isn't Mario on PC?"

@Thread

I bought Skyrim back then on console for 70€
I bought Skyrim a couple Steam Sales ago again on PC for 5$ or less.
Which made them more money?

I bought the Witcher 3 PC Version for 20€ from some 3rd Party Key Site
I will buy the PS4 Version of Witcher 3 for 70€(for my father) in some random store i will go to
Which will make CDPR more happy?

Of course PC Games sell - For 5$ and with heavy discounts or low prices to begin with.
Outside of the really big franchises like GTA,Diablo etc nothing will sell comparable to the console Versions(50 million PS360 and PS4X1 Purchases for nearly full price of GTA5) especially not if the PC Version is priced 60+$/€/full price
And of course as i did with Witcher 3 you could get the game 1 month before it released for 20€ on PC - This surely makes the Publisher/developer happy
Yeeeeah a billion sales for nearly nothing on PC from Sales(months later) or 3rd Party Key sites(even before release) or Millions of console people paying full price on release day......Just think about what they like to see more =)

You may be overthinking it. Regardless of % of sales at X price or Y price, the math is simpler.

A- How much does it cost to release the game for PC.
B- How much profit can be gained from that release (whether it's 5,000,000 copies at $5/piece, or 500,000 copies at $50/piece, with digital distribution the difference is nil. It's just money.

If B is greater than A, then if there are no outside complications (such as moneyhatting to a 3rd party from a console maker), then that's what they do. If A is greater than B, then no dice.

Simple.

Are most people in this thread really of the opinion that everyone buys their console games at 60$ and everyone who buys PC games, waits for them to cost 5$?
What about free games on PS+, Platinum releases that cost 10-15$ (which is where I get most my games), PC gamers who actually do buy their games at full price (or at least for a lot more than 5$, games of any impact very rarely dip into these prices)?

I bought, ironically enough, Skyrim for 50 euros, among others. Same with the Half-Life series, Oblivion, Morrowind, Starcraft II, Diablo III, The Witcher 1 and 2 etc. PC gamers do buy games at full price or close to it as well, but they also buy a lot of games on sale, no doubt. I just think it's unfair to suggest that we're all such cheap bastards who are more or less ruining the business on purpose. And on the others side; there are a lot of people who buy their console games cheaply, it's not like software stays priced at 60$ for very long, unless it's a Nintendo game or Call of Duty.
Every gamer I know who spends ridiculous money on gaming is a PC gamer first and foremost.

This thread, and many others with similar themes before it, seem to incite posts with a very black & white stance on PC gaming, where one fits into one category as a PC gamer and one as a console gamer, there are many stages in between and big differences on each platform.
As a general rule; 3rd party blockbusters do indeed generate more revenue on consoles, that much is true, but the above mentioned claims are still unfair and false.

Obviously because Mario on PC wouldn't sell well.

Bottom line from the responses in this thread: Console gamers happily pay 60-70 €/$ for their games.

It's the lie they like to tell themselves to help them sleep better at night.  Most of the games I have on Steam I got at full price, or, slightly discounted due to getting in at early access.

30 million Skyrim sales is pretty insane!!
