I'd like to see the numbers without the inclusion of Smart Phones. I think the numbers would tell a different tale.

Yeah considering this is suggesting that everyone in North and South America games on their smartphone, but of course that isn't the case.

They would have to be 145 years old for this to be possible.

That's cool, I love the fact that to some people gaming in refered to as "playing Nintendo" still, even when they're talking about ps4/X1

Yea my dad is one of them, he doesn't know what's the latest console he just keeps saying Nintendo lol

candy crush numbers will be offsetting both of those stats by a large amount.

From the wikipedia entry regarding candy crush.

While the game includes freemium content, 97.7% of people playing the game are playing for free, while only 2.3% pay.

Including all of 2014, Candy Crush Saga players spent over $1.33 billion on in-app purchases which was a decline from the previous year, since in the second half of 2013 players spent over $1.04 billion.[8]

That means that from 2.3% of the player base of the game they turned out over a billion dollars. So of those "gamers" who are playing this every evening (it's also technically a multiplayer game since you send requests to other people on facebook) keep in mind that 97 in every 100 don't spend a cent on gaming.

Just shows what a super power Nintendo came to be in the 80s especially, putting itself as the generic trademark for gaming like the hoover(vacuum cleaner).

Wait, 67 million people play LoL in a week? I'll never understand what's atractive about that game...

I think the interesting question is the divide between "Do you game?" and "Do you consider yourself a gamer?"

My parents play games on computers and phones, but majority are related to classic gaming like chess, solitaire, majong or trivial pursuit.

They game, and do so in virtual format, but they have no clue who Miyamoto is, or what Half Life is, much less explaining trends and technical aspects of the medium.

So, I am happy gaming is becoming more open and diverse, but I still see the classic 14-40 male dominating when I go on forums or at conventions.

Take candycrap out of the stats and you are probably left with less than 2% female gamers....

He probably moreso means that if you rate the number of devices which have been used to play something like candy crush it is unlikely that device was purchased with playing said game in mind, ie no one buys a gaming pc/phone because Candy crush is available on it, it just happens to be there as a time waster while waiting for a bus. Something like GTA5 on the other hand is a game which influences buying of gaming specific hardware because it is a reason to own a system it on.

He also didn't claim it to be fake information, just invalid since the 22billion spent wouldn't break down well over all "gaming" if people are including pcs which are used for a facebook game once a month as a gaming purchase or a mobile phone which you bring with you for dropping kids off at the pool being a 600dollar gaming spend.

Pretty much this.  Invalid and fake do not mean the same thing.

I meant just because someone else games differently than you doesn't mean they can't be "Gamers."  Candy crush is a game.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

Yeah, the problem is the vast majority of those folks, don't actually contribute to the industry (freemium).  And many many of those people don't consider themselves 'gamers' because they play a time wasting app on a phone.  Someone else raised a good question, about those who self-identify as gamer's vs those who just play a random game here and there.

It's not necessarily that someone else games differently than me, it's do those people consider themselves gamers?  Either way though, I don't 'really' care, I can just see the point being made that there's a very real difference between how the two groups contribute to the industry.
