ALBW is superior to the DS Zelda games. So are the two N64 remakes.
FE: A is better than the DS FE games.
Super Mario 3D Land is better than New Super Mario Bros for the DS.
Pokémon X/Y is better than Black & White: I just hated the Pokémon designs of that generation.
Bravely Default is better than the DS FF games.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf is better than Animal Crossing for the DS.
It has Super Smash Bros.
It has Youkai Watch which I'm very excited about.
It has Luigi's Mansion.
It has Monster Hunter games.
It doesn't have a bad Metroid game (yet).
BUT
Mario Kart DS is better than Mario Kart 7.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is better than Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
It has GTA: Chinatown Wars.
It has good Castlevania games.
The hardware just like vita hardware is much more refined then their predecessors. Sadly they lack the same support.

I cleared out series I don't really care about.
I'd say that Bravely Default and the DS FFs are a push to me for quality (quantity, obviously DS wins that). Awakening is obviously better than a remake. Can't agree that 3D Land is worth championing. Smash Bros is a console title for me. Youkai Watch isn't a good game. I've stopped caring about MonHun, but it's certainly a title to showcase the hardware. I've actually enjoyed the rhythm titles on 3DS the most.
I think you forget about the great Layton triology, the excellent Pheonix Wright titles, Elite Beat Agents, great RPGs like Radiant Historia, FF4 remake, DQ4-6, Lunar Knights, Suikoden, and Valkyrie Profile. There's a dozen other titles I could list, but the main point is that the DS had quality titles but in much greater volume. There was far more for people to play and it certainly captured a wider audience.

How do you know? ;)
If a boring game like Pokémon X/Y can score 88% on metacritic and be played by millions...
The 3DS also has Layton and Phoenix Wright games, I just don't care about those. DQ is the one major franchise the 3DS is missing.

Good point. I'm overestimating things here.
The 3DS doesn't have as many and I think most would agree that the starts were the high points for both series.

I'll take your word for it, haven't played those games. Might need to get into it perhaps...

It's obviously didn't surpassed the DS, it sold 50 million vs. 150 million.
