Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Is Hurtin' In Japan, NX Really Needs To Be Out Sooner Than Later

Weekly hardware sales are not the metric for success for a four-year-old console that is already one of the best-selling ever in the region. Software sales are. That is where the money comes from.

The majority are winding down Wii U development. Like for example the Splatoon team once they're done Splatoon ... likely are done with the Wii U.

The main EAD Tokyo (Mario Galaxy 1/2/3D World), Next Level Luigi's Mansion team, core part of the Animal Crossing team, are working on NX projects IMO.

Miyamoto already strongly hinted the next Mario game will be for the next system and this was months ago now.

I think Mario Kart 9 for NX is well already underway too, MK8 wrapped almost a year ago now.

Sure sure it wrapped it almost a year ago even though the DLC was still being developed earlier this year. The animal crossing team is working on animal crossing U which ha sbeen hinted at a large number of times. Do you really want to try me? You're assuming a lot just to back your agenda.

The DLC is not being developed by like 50 people, it's likely a small handful and it's likely been finished for a while too, they're just spacing out the DLC to make sure the game keeps selling over time.

MK9 is well in development for NX IMO.

So is the next 3D Mario. Well into development, right now. As I type this.

Wanna bet against that?

I think Animal Crossing is a fairly good bet too. That's the type of game Wii U would've gotten had it sold quite well, but when you sell like that, considerations have to be made.

AC on Wii U would be poor asset management on Nintendo's part. It's not going to "save" the Wii U or change the system's final LTD, but it would incredibly valuable for Nintendo's next handheld launch (which IMO is unified platform, so when the handheld launches, the next generation in effect launches for Nintendo) and sell more copies in the long run too.

And once again I'm done. You have your agenda and I have my reasoning. End of the story is I will wait and see and if things go in line with you I will be very disappointed in nintendo, if the NX is a handheld I shall be laughing all the way to gamestop where I shall buy one.

NX is probably both. It's not just one thing.

Nintendo can't be expected to support two distinct hardware platforms, not even Sony is able to do it even with third party support.

It's just an outdated concept, yes, you could do that ... when you could make console games like Mario 64 with 30-40 people and handheld games with like 5-10 people.

You can't do that anymore, Nintendo is absolutely cracking under the pressure to have to support the Wii U and 3DS. So bump 3DS to PS3-level graphics/design scope. Now bump your console presumably to match the PS4? Or would it be PS5? In any case ... there's no way Nintendo can juggle two platforms like that, it's an unreasonable expectation.

The company that can't even get a Zelda game released in HD in under 5 years is suddenly by 2017/18 going to magically be able to get a steady flow of games for two distinct hardware platform with the baseline platform (portable) being comparable to the PS3/360 in spec? Pigs might fly too, but I doubt it.

It's not what I personally want.

If you don't want to have a discussion about it, lol no one is putting a gun to your head forcing you into this thread.

Chill out. I'm guessing you're not 9 years old and have to beg your parents for a game console too so I don't why you are so hellbent against the idea of new hardware anyway, a new system every 4-5 years is not going to cause the world to end.

The hysteria about that is just ridiculously overblown.

Here's another way to look at it

NES+Game & Watch

SNES+Gameboy(89-96)

N64+Gameboy(97-03)

GC+Gameboy Advance

Wii U+Nintendo 3DS

Each of these 5 generation have sold about 25 million in Japan give or take a few million.

Wii+Nintendo DS sold like 45 million, they are clearly an outlier and are not what we should base our standards on. No matter what way u want to split it, Nintendo is not in dire straits in Japan in any way, shape or form.

NES+G&W is 32.22

SNES/N64/GB are 55.18m, so a 27.59m average.

GC+GBA only 21m, but of course the GBA had a very short life and again, doing as well as the Gamecube isn't something to strive for.  As Iwata said "we shouldn't continue this business if our only target is to outsell GameCube."

3DS+Wii U is currently also at 21m.  It can probably make it to 25m eventually, but there is another factor not gone into.  That factor is that the console portion has continued to decrease.  Those 17.17 million SNESs accounted for 194.85m software units sold.  The 18.7m 3DS hasn't managed half of that.  The tie ratio is also lower than the DS at the same point in its life, but it has improved on the GBA.  Granted, just selling more console hardware in the current environment isn't the only answer.  Nintendo's home console tie ratios have dropped hard since the days of the NES/SNES.  They would need more than a Wii scenario, they'd need the kind of widespread software support that their pre N64 consoles had.

OMG. Coould you stop now whith the Nintendooms threads? Jesus.

In terms of hardware they are fine, 25 million per generation in Japan is strong and the average when excluding DS/Wii era. As for consoles, I strongly believe that Nintendo is going to fully unify their devices by having their handheld and consoles share a library, it just comes down to individual preferences on form factor, that alone helps reduce R&D costs of hardware by not having to make 2 completely seperate devices and it's helps with software because no longer is there an install base issue, games on Wii U simply can't sell high numbers because they are stuck on a console with 3 million or so lifetime sales, that is fixed when every game is available to the 20-25 million install base of both devices.

Also do those 3DS software sales include eShop exclusives and Virtual Console titles or is it just shipments+digital sales of retail titles?
