Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Is Hurtin' In Japan, NX Really Needs To Be Out Sooner Than Later

Just off the top of my head ...

Super Mario Galaxy 3 - EAD Tokyo wrapped on Mario 3D World in fall 2013, given that it takes them on average about 2 years to deliver a new 3D Mario, summer/fall 2016 should be more than overdue for a new 3D Mario.

Animal Crossing Next - IMO this skips the Wii U. Nintendo themselves admits the series works better on handheld and it sells much better on handheld. Could be a no brainer launch title for the NX fusion concept.

Luigi's Mansion 3 - Next Level wrapped LM2 in March 2013 ... they haven't delivered Nintendo a game in quite some time (that's almost 2 years ago now). Whenever Nintendo sells 3+ million of any game, a sequel is almost always immediately greenlit ... remember when people though Nintendo would let the DKC series rest for Metroid Prime 4? Nope, Retro was put right back on another DKC, which is pretty much Nintendo's standard operating procedure.

Mario Kart 9 - Might be more of a reach for 2016 ... but not impossible. Nov/Dec 2016 launch would give them 2 1/2 years of development time, which is about the same gap of time between MK7 and MK8.

Ignoring the elephant in the room which might also be the next Zelda launching for both NX and Wii U, like Twilight Princess did.

That isn't enough to entice gamers to go out and buy the console in a mad rush. This will only get the core buying it.

They need a FPS, a racing sim, sports games. RPG, and so on ontop of that list to give enough variety to entice people.

If your list is the launch window then the system is doomed from day one.

Monster Hunter 5 could be ready by that fall too but the other types of games you're looking at really ... it's up to Nintendo if they want to pick up the phone and have a talk.

I suspect if its a Fusion concept some developers like EA and Activision may come back and give it an OK shot, because you'll be able to make essentially one game and then sell it to both Nintendo handheld and home audiences, so there's probably some appeal there.

Zelda NX, Mario Galaxy 3, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion 3, maybe something smaller like F-Zero from Nintendo

Monster Hunter 5, FIFA, Madden NFL, Calladooty NX Ops, Yokai Watch 4, LEGO Star Wars: Force Awakens, from third parties.

That honestly would be overkill for a launch but it's not impossible either if Nintendo really wanted to do it.

The great irony in it all is that Japan was the one region where the most people were sure the Wii U had a chance at winning. I even recall someone saying that "Japan is the gaming capital of the world and is showing us what is to come in the rest of the world; keep your eye on Japan."

Really? Ur going to use JohnLucas to generalize an entire group?

No, just using a silly quote to show that it is silly. The vast majority of Nintendo fans disagree with 95% of what he says anyway, so that would be a misplaced attempt at any rate.

There really were quite a few users who were adamant that the Wii U would win Japan though, easily so. I have to admit that I didn't expect the PS4 to do quite as well as it is right now, and I never imagined that any one console would "win" by a large margin, that could be wrong. But I still don't think anyone will come close to the 10 million mark in Japan in the 8th gen.

That's a bit extreme

2014 Q1-850k
2015 Q1-735k

3DS+Wii U are down about 15% YoY, not nearly as doomed as ur making things out to be.

That assumes that 2014 is a solid point to compare it to.  In 2013 Nintendo hardware was at 1,512k by week 13 in Japan.  In 2012 it was 1,429k.  If we go back to years like 2007 or 2008 it was in the 2-3m range.

6th gen vs 8th gen Nintendo comparison

FY Mar 01-1.06m vs FY Mar 11-1.06m
FY Mar 02-6.49m vs FY Mar 12-4.79m
FY Mar 03-4.98m vs FY Mar 13-6.61m
FY Mar 04-4.14m vs FY Mar 14-5.24m
FY Mar 05-2.68m vs FY Mar 15-3.30m (thru 9 months)

So no, Nintendo is not hurting nearly as much in Japan as u want it to seem.

This ignores that the DS had already launched by that last year and did 2.12m.  If you were to remove the New 3DS from the 8th gen, that would bring the most recent FY down to only 1.55m.  This comparison is also using Nintendo's worst selling console (at the time) and handheld (not counting stuff like VB or G&W) in Japan, so selling comparably isn't something to be happy about.

Good points. Looks like Nintendo will be down in the 600-650k (3DS + Wii U) combined Q1 this time next year assuming a normal rate of decline for the 3DS and Wii U continuing to kinda wander aimlessly. Can't see Nintendo realistically being OK with that for too long.

Anyone else is sick of Mummelmann reminding us how there were a bunch of crazy posters with great expectations for the Wii U?

Why are you quoting me to ask that question? My answer is obvious. The amount of reminders is more or less proportional with the amount of unrealistic expectations. Besides; it's really not that bad, do show me at any rate. Post it on my wall if you will.

Calling out the craziest predictions that were written with the outmost certainty and even open mockery of those who opposed them in only right imo, it's not like it's about you, or even anyone else, the quote is from one user and was not aimed at anyone else. If he hadn't wanted anyone to quote him to show the ridiculous nature of his posts; he may have considered not posting the ridiculous things in the first place. There weren't a "bunch" either, there were a few, most of which are either gone or even permabanned.

If I had maintained that the PS4 would sell 600 million units throughout the past 2-3 years; I would consider it only natural that people call me out on my madness, especially if I had been arrogant and dismissive towards others and pretended to have divine insight or prophetic talents.

PS: Your biggest problem is this though; it is relevant to the topic and we're still seeing posters in this very thread saying that the Wii U "fine" in Japan, when it is clearly not, it's selling on par with the 9 year old PS3 at the moment.

I remember a user called Crazzyman, with a shark avatar, he used to have some insane PS3 predictions and posts and became a legend in 07 and 08. We've had several of them through the years but most are gone now. Avinash_Tyagi was another legend, and Hus. Good times.

Our very own Rolstoppable also had an insane prediction in the 7th gen, but most people have forgotten it, I think. He's grown into a bitter old man like myself anyway...

Here's another way to look at it

NES+Game & Watch

SNES+Gameboy(89-96)

N64+Gameboy(97-03)

GC+Gameboy Advance

Wii U+Nintendo 3DS

Each of these 5 generation have sold about 25 million in Japan give or take a few million.

Wii+Nintendo DS sold like 45 million, they are clearly an outlier and are not what we should base our standards on. No matter what way u want to split it, Nintendo is not in dire straits in Japan in any way, shape or form.

What was Rols crazy prediction? Was it Smash would outsell GTA?
