That assumes that 2014 is a solid point to compare it to. In 2013 Nintendo hardware was at 1,512k by week 13 in Japan. In 2012 it was 1,429k. If we go back to years like 2007 or 2008 it was in the 2-3m range.
This ignores that the DS had already launched by that last year and did 2.12m. If you were to remove the New 3DS from the 8th gen, that would bring the most recent FY down to only 1.55m. This comparison is also using Nintendo's worst selling console (at the time) and handheld (not counting stuff like VB or G&W) in Japan, so selling comparably isn't something to be happy about. |
Here's another way to look at it
NES+Game & Watch
SNES+Gameboy(89-96)
N64+Gameboy(97-03)
GC+Gameboy Advance
Wii U+Nintendo 3DS
Each of these 5 generation have sold about 25 million in Japan give or take a few million.
Wii+Nintendo DS sold like 45 million, they are clearly an outlier and are not what we should base our standards on. No matter what way u want to split it, Nintendo is not in dire straits in Japan in any way, shape or form.
