Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Is Hurtin' In Japan, NX Really Needs To Be Out Sooner Than Later

No, Nintendo needs support. PS4 is selling like water because every week it has 3/4 new games. That's what Wii U needs. Just release another hardware won't make new games bloom of nowhere

Nope, OP is right : new hardware brings new innovations, new capabilities and therefore new ways to attract the costumer, which 3rd parties could take advantage of.

3DS is on the wane because Vita/PS4/PS3 produce superior visual quality, so Ninty needs a powerful NX to keep up.

In terms of hardware they are fine, 25 million per generation in Japan is strong and the average when excluding DS/Wii era. As for consoles, I strongly believe that Nintendo is going to fully unify their devices by having their handheld and consoles share a library, it just comes down to individual preferences on form factor, that alone helps reduce R&D costs of hardware by not having to make 2 completely seperate devices and it's helps with software because no longer is there an install base issue, games on Wii U simply can't sell high numbers because they are stuck on a console with 3 million or so lifetime sales, that is fixed when every game is available to the 20-25 million install base of both devices.

Also do those 3DS software sales include eShop exclusives and Virtual Console titles or is it just shipments+digital sales of retail titles?

Pretty sure it only includes digital versions of games available at retail.  However, from what we've seen of Famitsu digital numbers, the best selling digital games are overwhelmingly ones available at retail.  The one digital only game that ever seems to rank (although now there is a retail version) is Minecraft.

Yes but when u add in sales of each and every digital only title and virtual console release, that's gotta add up to a pretty decent number.

Well handhelds never have the attach rate than consoles do, so it's not exactly a surprise the Super Famicom sold way more software than the 3DS has despite the 3DS actually have a slighter larger userbase.

Even that ... there very likely are far more people with multiple 3DS' due to model revisions, whereas, a console (especially back in the 90s), if you bought one, you basically kept it for the 5 years. The actual singular 3DS userbase in Japan is probably more like 13-14 million actual owners.

It certainly adds to the total, but I don't think it is a gamechanger.  From September 2013 to September 2014 only 42 digital games sold over 10k.  Most of those were available at retail and most weren't on 3DS.  Only 2 of them seem to be eshop exclusive 3DS titles.  Now granted, that list isn't comprehensive, it is just based on the charts that we get.  However in just this one week there were at least 20 games that sold over 12k at retail in Japan (this was an unusually big week though).

This did get a download card retail release.  I'm not sure how Nintendo counts games like that.

Wish people would stop talking about NX like they know what it is, its not been confirmed to be a new home console and if it was a home console were not seeing it until the end of 2017.

PS4, PS3 and specially Vita are everything but a threat to 3DS
