If they plan it out well ... something like this really wouldn't be impossible ...

Legend of Zelda (dual launch with Wii U) - launch Sept. 2016
F-Zero NX - launch Sept. 2016

Super Mario Galaxy 3 - November 2016

Animal Crossing NX - December 2016

Luigi's Mansion 3 - February 2017

Monster Hunter 5 - April 2017

Mario Kart 9 - June 2017

Game. Set. Match.

Thats still not enough, Nintendos problem has nothing to do with the amount of games they publish, they probably do more than any plaform holder, they need the top games from multiplatform as well, Nintendo being just for Nintendo published games will never be viable in the long term.

It really feels like they have to partner up with anybody they can just to get games on there system, no one seems to make Nintendo games just because they want to as its a viable business model.

Something big has to change, they either need another mass market gimmick, which is much easier to say than to acheive, or they need to become much more attractive to other developers.

They have smartphone monies now to pay all the bills and then some. That's the "something big has to change" thing.

The NX just has to be nicely profitable but it doesn't have to carry Nintendo on its own. QoL, amiibo, media licensing (Mario CG movie?) will also spread the burden around.

That said, more than a few third parties probably would support a Nintendo if they could get the 3DS size userbase without the PS2 level engine making so they could actually bring their more modern titles over. But wouldn't be the sales driver.

Well heres hoping so, although your making it sound like other divisions will carry a console does not sound good long term, things that dont pull there weight eventually get cut off in business.

I also feel they need to align there hardware with others, i think your right in saying developers dont want to have a seperate engine archtiecture just for Ninty ports.

The industry doesn't need 3 consoles that do basically the same thing and it's never supported three successful consoles that do the same thing either. And no, 6 or 7 Nintendo franchises isn't enough of a differniator for most people ... Nintendo tried that with GameCube.

Nintendo is gonna do their own thing, I don't think there's much choice in the matter anyway.

Obviously those aren't the only titles releasing in that time frame, just the major system sellers. 3DS gets strong Japanese 3rd party support, no reason to believe they won't be present next-gen as well. The likes of Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Activision, Warner Bros. won't miss out on a major launch, they will show up will a couple titles each and further support will be determined by how successful their launch games sell. Nintendo has made huge strides in increasing their indie support, I expect that to continue in the coming years and Nintendo still gets all the kid/family friendly titles like Lego, Skylanders, Disney, Just Dance, etc.

Consoles are differntiated by Software and OS features, not the hardware, having custom hardware that makes it harder for people to develop for is just going to fail hard.  Yes they probably have to find there own space in the market, but that cant be at the cost of alienating developers, as you say a console just for Nintendo games is not going to work.

And what would the NX solve?

Same Nintendo games. What is the point? What needs to change to gain widespread appeal isnt to drop your fans on the water and change nothing.
That is the worst thing you can do. Thats what SEGA did.

No, Nintendo needs to soldier this one out until the time is right.

I've been saying this again and again. Everyone seems to think that a new piece of hardware will change the whole climate. Nintendo needs to launch their new platform with quality games and follow with a big first year - that takes time. They also need their diminishing fanbase to know they won't pull the rug out from under them in another 2-3 years. That means time.

Everyone wants a quick fix NOW. That fix will bump sales for the nonce, but will do nothing for the long-term financials.

If amiibo continue to sell, and Nintendo can continue to make a profit with their current hardware (they did last quarter), then they need to ride that out until the world is frothing at the mouth for the NX - then unleash it. Patience is a difficult thing for most to understand, but a steady hand is what will guide Nintendo into the future of gaming.

People should remember Nintendo still is going to sell about 90 million hardware units this generation in a fairly weakened state.

People still buy Nintendo hardware.

The issue they have with their software teams divided and modern development being far more complex, they can't satisify the software needs for two distinct platforms any longer.

That and the larger part of the Nintendo fanbase doesn't have access to what are generally their best games (Mario Kart 8 is better than 7, 3D World is better than 3D Land, Splatoon coming, etc.). So their bigger games end up selling to the smaller portion of their fanbase ... another issue unified platform would solve.

Smartphones is a bigger issue to Nintendo than Sony/MS.

By the end of this generation, Nintendo will have sold about 80-90 million units of hardware on the strength of Nintendo-published titles, Japanese 3rd parties, kid-friendly western games and indie support. If Nintendo can get similar results next-gen out of a unified concept than that's pretty damn good and a sizeable market for Nintendo and others to sell software on.

"The great irony in it all is that Japan was the one region where the most people were sure the Wii U had a chance at winning"

So far, it's winning, unless you want to include handhelds.

So, if I go in the ring with Mike Tyson and land the first two punches; I'm set to win the boxing match? This is a shockingly illogical way of thinking. I'm sure I can win a 100 meter race with Usain Bolt as well if I get a 10 meter head start.

The Wii U is not "winning" Japan; it is slowly but certainly being caught and will fall into 2nd place in the home console market sooner or later, to deny that at this stage is beyond ridiculous.
Let's also not forget that the PS4 launched in Japan about four months after NA and EU and outside of the holiday season; making it only about a year old in that region with the numbers we have here, with a fairly poor launch and a fairly slow start, it has sold about 1.16 million as of March 1st, more or less exactly 12 months after release, it has still to receive any of its biggest franchises, the first will be either MGS or FF this year and it has not had a price cut or extensive bundling either.

The Wii U has sold around 2.23 million in its roughly 27 months on the market, including two whole holidays and a december launch and it has received all its biggest games besides Zelda.

Are you sure you want to make this argument that it is winning?

It's ahead in both ltd and aligned sales, this fact cannot be denied. what you think will happen in the future is an opinion.

"just a few" japanese titles? ps4 has just received a lot of games over the past weeks, including DQ heroes. A boost was expected. it's the post boost baseline that matters.

None of those games are their main francises or even particularly big games at that, is what I was refering to. Dragon Quest Heroes is not a proper Dragon Quest game, but a Musou game. Yakuza has never been a system seller, etc. Also, hardly anyone bought FF Type-0 HD in Japan unlike in the west. (Because they've already played it on PSP, unlike us.) And yet we've been seeing impressive signs lately in spite of that. What will be really interesting is when games like Metal Gear Solid V, Final Fantasy XV, a main staple Resident Evil game, Persona 5, Kingdom Hearts 3, and other jrpgs start coming out, etc.
WiiU already released several of their main franchises released, while PS4 has yet to release even one. WiiU also had a price reduction, while PS4 has not.
Looking forward there's not a lot left for Nintendo to throw at Japan, and it will just get worse with time. Meanwhile Sony have pretty much everything left to play.

That's called "being in the lead", not "winning".
The one winning is the one on track to win by the end. And that does not look to be the case for the WiiU at all right now. It's getting outsold by PS3 at times iirc.

"None of those games are their main francises or even particularly big games at that, is what I was refering to"

they came in great quantity, one week even had 3 releases.

"The one winning is the one on track to win by the end."

Wii U is ahead (winning) and any "track" is uncertain for either. ps4 was in the low 10k before dragon quest heroes, what guarantee do you have that it won't go back there? at the same time, you are comparing it to wii u numbers when it didn't get a good release in a long time. we can't tell how big or small of a boost it will get from xenoblade, splatoon, yoshi...
