The industry doesn't need 3 consoles that do basically the same thing and it's never supported three successful consoles that do the same thing either. And no, 6 or 7 Nintendo franchises isn't enough of a differniator for most people ... Nintendo tried that with GameCube. 

Nintendo is gonna do their own thing, I don't think there's much choice in the matter anyway. 

Consoles are differntiated by Software and OS features, not the hardware, having custom hardware that makes it harder for people to develop for is just going to fail hard.  Yes they probably have to find there own space in the market, but that cant be at the cost of alienating developers, as you say a console just for Nintendo games is not going to work.
