You do realize that 90% of NES sales came after August 1987, heck the system wasn't even stocked nationally in the US until '87. Most people didn't get one until 1988. That means when Nintendo introduced the Super NES in August 1991, mostp people in the West had only had their NES for 3 years or so.

Did we cry about it back then? Hell no. Me and my friends couldn't wait to get an SNES, in fact I remember waiting for the SNES to come out seemed almost painful.

Of the four major hardware manufacturers, three of them (Sega, Nintendo, Microsoft) have had their most successful game system come after a shortened previous platform too. The Genesis/Mega Drive (best selling Sega console) came after the Sega Master System which was only supported primarily for 3 years. The DS (best selling Nintendo platform) came 3 1/2 year after the GBA. The XBox 360 (best selling Microsoft platform) came 4 years after the original XBox.

You want your money's worth from Wii U? Play Bayonetta 2. Captain Toad. Wonderful 101. Pikmin 3. Get Splatoon. Devil's Third. Xenoblade X. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was overlooked big time.

Also the magical 5th year of support for Nintendo consoles. Ah yes ... who doesn't remember the magical period of Nov 2000-Nov 2001 for the N64 where we got ... uh Paper Mario and uh ..... Conker. And who can forget the gaming oasis that was Nov.2005-Nov.2006 on the GameCube where we were graced with the awesome must have .... Mario Party 294848. Or those lovely last two years of Wii support where Nintendo managed to release a whopping TWO games worth buying (Zelda and Kirby).

Real talk: Nintendo actually only supports their consoles for 4 years. The 5th year is just a crock, they don't actually really support their consoles for that final year, so I say why not just skip that traditional "dead" period? Do you get a cookie or something if Wii U hits its 5th birthday?

Are you missing your 480p Wii graphics these days? Have you ever played Mario Kart 8 and thought "gee I wish I could play this on my crappy outdated Wii"?New hardware is *better* for the consumer. You get a better experience with your games.

Way to compare apples and oranges XD

NES 83

SNES 90

N64 96

GC 2001

Wii 2006

Wii U 2012

Nintendo has never made a system after only 4 years..... Also I mentioned earlier how Nintendo cares the least about their customers out of the big 3 as it is. This would just be the last straw where I say (as most people already have) I will NEVER buy an Nintendo system again. In the modern world a console MUST get at least 5 years of support. Anything else is a slap in the face of the consumer.

Really no point in even having this conversation because there is no chance of the NX releasing next year anybody who thinks different is lying to themselves lol

Unless you're Japanese you sure as heck didn't own an NES in 1983.

90% of NES owners in the West came after August 1987 (look at their own shipment data). I got my NES in the summer of 1989 for instance. For most people Nintendo replaced the NES in North America after only about 3 years.

No one back then cried about the Super NES launching in August 1991 other than a few grumpy parents. I remember every kid was over the moon about the idea of a SUPER FUCKING NINTENDO. We were excited. I remember seeing just the freaking title screen in Nintendo Power and saying "I must own this".

Today gamers on message boards have apparently become the grumpy parents. Go figure.

No, the reason that it worked so well for TP was because Wii and GCN were extremely similar consoles, but this time I think power is going to be a bigger difference. I think they would rather start the console off with a game that shows what the NX is probably really capable of.

bet: lost

Your point? That was over 20 years ago...... COMPLETELY different world. Just because it launched late in the U.S. does not mean Nintendo did not support it properly.

What different world? The one today where everyone on this board is most likely able to get their own job and doesn't have to beg their parents for their game systems?

Or the one in which buying a new smartphone every 1-2 years is perfectly acceptable? The world in which an 8 year old has a $500 tablet so they can play Candy Crush and watch cartoons?

Meh, if anything you guys have it easy today. Whining about $60 games for example (which get discounted to $30 at every Best Buy after 6-8 months)? Try $90 for a brand new copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 ($150 or so with inflation) and get back to me. /end Cranky Kong rant.

I agree with the majority of this. I buy a 100$ smartphone every year and have no issue with 60$ games (at launch, Nintendo should learn to drop prices though) and I do would never give a kid a tablet or phone. Leapfrog products and then Nintendo products for my kids lol

Not only that the pre-owned market today is huge. You can find basically any huge release discounted massively usually after a few months. I remember the EB next to my house had Destiny for like $30. Watch Dogs for $20.

LOL, in the NES/SNES days ... Punch-Out was $50 in 1987 and it was $50 in 1990 and that was that. If you wanted it you paid the full freaking sticker price or you had to go to Blockbuster/Mom N' Pops Rental Store and rent it for the weekend.

Besides really Nintendo's support of any console after year 4 post-SNES is utter shite. Who cares if they skip that crap period and just go straight to the next machine.

Good riddance to bad rubbish I say. 2005/06 was shit for the GameCube. 2011/12 was shit for the Wii. 2001 was midly shit but still shit nontheless for the N64. Like who cares? If Nintendo supports the Wii U in 2017 guess what the support for it is going to be like? That's right. Shit.

To me really I say what's wrong with just skipping this "shit phase"? It's not shit because Nintendo hates you, it's just logistical thing ... regardless of if NX even launches in 2016 or not, all the dev teams will have to start working on NX software in 2016 to make sure the system actually has games for 2017, 2018, etc.

I think if we rationally even look at Nintendo's history in the last 20 years, they should have launched the GameCube one year earlier (in 2000) and they Wii U is most definitely at least a year late if not more.

im with Soundwave, its not like Ninty consoles get fantastic support in the final year so it doesnt really matter if its 5 years. Its all semantics at that point.

I'm doubting it too. Releasing NX next year would seem a bit of jumping the gun. The only way I would see Zelda U being cross gen is if it was delayed to 2017, and I don't really see that happening.

if it comes to NX then NX confirmed will be the most powerful handled , and it will be a fusion of handled and console, i hope for the best thou, coming or not i just hope NX is a tablet like iPad but as powerful like Wii U at least and can be portable and also can be played on large screen.
