They should drop home console and concentrate their development efforts on handheld to focus their workforce. Instead they are spreading themselves more thin, by supporting even more platforms. It would have been all great, if it was DeNA developing the games with access to Nintendos IP-portfolio (so a licensing deal), so Nintendo wouldn't use more of their own workforce (except for some help for DeNA). But as it is, it's stupid.

If Nintendo drops home consoles then Nintendo as the company you know now will not exist in 10 years. They will be strictly Mobile

They have made mistakes on those too... And the biggest mistakes they have made is not embracing third parties and listening to them. If they listened to the third parties, paid some of them and made a console that was third party friendly like Sony/MS and stopped trying to do gimmicky things with their consoles... It will be 40+ million cause then they will have Nintendo exclusives + Third Party games.

I am not saying mobile games aren't a good avenue for success. Its just I don't like the idea of Nintendo using their resources to make games for mobile

Edit: Oh and I am pretty sure handhelds will have a market for a few more generations and not just one more

I agree with you to some but Nintendo will still struggle to sell that many consoles without also creating different style of games (more mature games)

Handhelds may have a small market the gen after this one but it will not be very significant and will not keep Nintendo a household name like the Wii, DS, and 3DS did. If Nintendo does not make a successful home console soon I am scared for their future

If third parties can fill in the so called "Mature" Need, I don't think Nintendo really has to develop any. Third parties have plenty of "Mature" games and Nintendo exclusives sell a lot so if you combine to two, it should be fine

I think Nintendo handhelds will be fine for a few more generations cause of Nintendo IPs and their exclusive games and their deals with third parties like MH and Yokai Watch (ironic in a way). Its like how the ipod/itouch still exists even though there are plenty of phones for about the same price.

1) Didn't know about that, sounds stupid on Ataris side.
2) This is extremely irritating news. Why is that happening?
3) While it is always bad news if online for a game is killed, it is expected it will happen someday. That's why online independent of the game company is superior.
4) Stock didn't fall as much as it had risen before. That is normal correction, nothing really bad about it, because the news is, that Nintendo stock has risen. Going mobile though means they are using their development staff to support even more platforms, and did you get the feeling they are keeping up with the support of the existing platforms as they should?

Then what seperates them from MS and Sony who are better at what the majority of gamers want?  Nothing against Nintendo but the vast majority of gamers will take Uncharted or Halo over any Nintendo franchise. For me I will take Zelda over either, but I will take Bloodborne over any Nintendo franchise

Nintendo handhelds may profit for a few more gens but it wont be enough to hold Nintendo up by itself. The 3DS is already going to fall way short of the DS and the 3DS successor will fall way short of the 3DS.

You mean like this with the ipod? lol

There may still be a small profit for some of their MP3 players but the market is waaay smaller than it was

Why? While I see that handhelds aren't as big as they were, it is not visible that the market has complety crashed. The handheld lives on. And the market shrink will happen to home console too, in part already visible although Nintendo is taking most of this impact for now.

But game production on handhelds uses up so much less resources. If you look around, every dev says he needs millions of copies to break even. Projects failing that get cancelled sequels or development studios get closed. That is on home console. If we are looking to handhelds we see a lot of small japanese companies, that produce games for Japan only. They only return 100-200K with exceptions here and there. But still these companies keep on producing. So deceloping for handhelds is obviously pretty cheap, guessing from the numbers sold probably around 5 times cheaper, maybe even more. So let's be conservative and say three times only. Do you really think, that Nintendo could put out three times as much games on handhelds while dropping home console would be that bad? And probably with better results. I have the feeling, that quite some WiiU games are sold at a loss for Nintendo.

Handheld market is going to shrink by a huge amount next gen.

Very few games require "millions" to turn a profit. But that is the reason Indie games exist for devs to try risky new ideas

Obviously that is wrong. The best seeling Uncharted did nearly 7 millions, the best selling Halo did 12 million, Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros both sold above 20 million.

There may still be a small profit but its barely worth their time

Well, we don't really know that for sure because every Nintendo console since the Snes had major issues with third party games... I think that Nintendo exclusives + third party games stand a great chance against MS and Sony exclusives + third party games because of how much of a different experience Nintendo games offer from the other two. And not only that, the places where Nintendo does overlap with Sony, Nintendo does manage to outsell the Sony games by a notiable margin as well as out "score" them. The closet we have come to seeing how it might turn out would be the DS vs PsP or 3ds vs Vita because all of those handhelds had plenty of third party support and first party support but we all know that its a flawed comparison. I am not saying that it will outsell the next Sony console but I am saying that it will do far better than right now or even the GC days

And yes, I agree that it won't be enough to hold Nintendo up by itself hence why I wanted them to do it from mid next gen, not right now. And the 3ds had its own sets of issues that prevented it from being a huge success. It was over priced at launch and it came with a gimmick that sacraficed performance for little in return. The fact that it sold so much should tell you what Nintendo IPs + some third party games are capable of considering how badly the vita failed... At least the 3ds has a respectable sales number and I doubt it will go dramatically down next gen provided they don't go with the gimmicky nonsense or if they do, make sure its not something this costly

Well, thats the ipod classic but the rest are still there

XD LOL. Seriously do not even go there.

Guess that explains why the Wii U is outselling the PS4 and XBOne. Oh wait.....

We both seem to want pretty much the same thing from Nintendo. For them to return to their no nonsense days. I want Nintendo to make the moves to get 40 million home consoles sold per gen that will be enough to support them with their business model
