Forums - Nintendo - Theory: Wii U is part of the fusion concept and will be around longer than we think.

Nice theory! I really hope NIntendo does not replace the Wii U. It would be wise to wait until the PS4 and XB2 come out. Like you said, the fusion concept could possibly be integrated in their current systems, with the NX acting as the "expansion" to increase their lifespans.

Either way, we'll see what happens.

The Fusion idea really doesn't work if your console is par with a PS5/XB2 and the handheld is what? Akin to a Wii U, maybe slightly better? Mobile tech is not advancing *that* fast guys.

Not to mention the RAM disparity alone, next-gen RAM will probably be like 24GB or 32GB of main RAM + 128MB of eDRAM alone ... sorry but 2-3GB of dinky mobile RAM + a maybe a 24MB eDRAM buffer at much slower speed is not going to cut it.

It will be like trying to port PS3 games to the PSP or PS4 games to the Vita, the hardware gap is far too big.

When Iwata was talking about "brother" consoles (ie: fusion platforms) the example he used was the iPhone and iPad. The iPad is usually more powerful than the iPhone but uses roughly the same processor just upclocked a bit and sometimes has double the RAM (not 10x more).

It looks like it. Iwata said that Wii U and 3DS will be a part of their new concept. The NX will probably be released late 2016/early 2017, so we still have quite a while until the support stops.

Wether the NX is a handheld or a console is something we can't tell for now.

All they said was Wii U and 3DS (along with PC and Smart Devices and NX) will support the overarching PAID network service they have coming. Since that basically also is the new Club Nintendo it's where you'll get points for say purchasing software.

It doesn't mean all those platforms will share games ... that's a pretty big leap in logic.

Not a bad theory, but I disagree.

Its simply not powerful enough to progress another 4~5 years of gaming.

Nintendo has already demonstrated the capacity to develop essentially the same game or the exact same game on a home console and a lower powered handheld with WiiU/3DS.

However, with advances in networking and in scaling, Nintendo can create a more symbiotic relationship with a nearly identical gaming experience.

Nintendo won't push the edge of power with NX home console, but will with the handheld and they will share the same architecture. This will allow a game that must run native on the handheld to be highly scalable AND/OR they will focus on games similar to SSB where games are extremely similar and buying one gets you the other (digitally).

Its very intriguing one what may become.

I think NX will indeed be a Fusion platform that shares many of the core Nintendo IP.

So the question that a lot of people raise to that is "well then why buy both".

Nintendo's answer to that will be that the home console version will have all types of wacky to it, as in new ways to play.

In specific I think the NX Console will be Nintendo's "answer" or take on VR ... kinda. Nintendo patented this about 8 months ago:

http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/22968/article/nintendo-patents-a-3d-eye-tracking-device/

These is 3D head tracking, tech that's actually been around for a while, but it also incorporates things like being able to blow wind into the users face and create aromas/smells.

The reason I think Nintendo is going this route is because they've said while they're interested in VR, they don't like the "putting a giant helmet over your head and saying bye bye to world around you" aspect of it. This allows for a cheap, sorta VR experience, but since the glasses can be transparent you can play with and still be aware of your surroundings with your family/friends.

I'd expect a funky new controller to go with this (maybe a traditional type pad that breaks into two to become Wiimote like pointers/motion tracking devices).

That's basically my guess as to what NX is, but I think it could be some what spot on. I remember I largely predicted the Wiimote before its unveil, but the shape that I drew for it was pretty much exactly like the nunchaku instead of the Wiimote. But it was basically the same thing, wand type controller with pointer + motion tracking features that could emulate things like a sword or baseball bat or whatever.

With the announcement that we will hear more about dedicated hardware next year there are plenty of rumors around that the wii u era is coming to a close. I propose a different scenario.

1. The NX is the next handheld. It will be near wii u power and share a few games with the console allowing both to have bigger librarys, similar to the PS3/VITA setup. The NX will also be able to act as a gamepad and it will be released at the end of next year.

2. Nintendos next console will only release when the PS5 and XB2 come out. Nintendo has no reason to jump the gun again and lose more money on a console that will quickly be underpowered.  They also have no reason to make a dedicated console without attempting to get third partys on board. To get third partys on board they wil need to have a console comparable in power and structure to the other to minimise porting costs. If they don't want third party games then they might as well just stick to the NX only and allow it to play through TVs.

What do we think?

I disagree, Nintendo needs a new home console as soon as possible. This isn't true about handhelds though.

Nintendo really needs something for 2016, a new home console makes sense.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I think Nintendo needs to drop home console and focus on handheld. Home console games are eating up a lot more resources than handheld games and the profit is much smaller (or often inexistant). NIntendo can output enough games to create great support for a handheld if they put together all their resources, but even if they put together all resources for home console, the supoprt only would be mediocre, as HD-games eat up so much manpower.

No, because I think they'll aim for 4k in the home.

This could make sense but not for their future home console.

Nintendo has every reason to jump the gun, just as the 360 did in 2005. The Wii U isn't underpowered because it came out a year early, its underpowered because nintendo designed it to be that way. Being the "most" powerful has never been that important. They simply need to be significantly more powerful then the PS4/X1. In a year with no competition and superior performance they could gain favour from third parties and consumers, whilst having room to rebrand themselves. Launching alongside PS5/X2 would just be a messy and following the Wii U they'd be last on most people's minds.

Also I think people are taking the fusion too literally. I don't see Nintendo letting their home console and handheld share the exact same library. Remember that in that diagram they had Laptops, not just iphone/tablets.
