stock opens up 12%

Ya that was a bit predictable in movement. I honestly don't get whats up with Nintendo fans, as long as the quality remains, it isn't that bad of a move to have third platform..... you know like they did with the DS, eventually 2nd and 1st hopefully will be combined like all the prototype talks. Also this allows them to focus on combining the 1st and 2nd and actually be able to support it with decent online system.

Add: It is 15% up now.

exactly.

up 15% now.

The funny thing is, people aren't seeing the dedicated gaming devices are gonna go into eventual decline overall, with the rise of streaming gaming devices and easier PC gaming devices. Nintendo I think wouldn't adapt as fast to streaming gaming devices as they should. Given we are still 5-6 years away from those devices being passed the introduction phase, but still.

Nintendo stock shot up 20% this morning, which is pretty insane. Looks like my buy price underestimated the bump this news would give their stock.

If people cant see where this industry is heading is because they either dont want to or are incapable of looking outside of their hobby and its forums and their own preferences.  I was laughed at and abused when I said mobile would affect dedicated handhelds here years ago.  Dedicated handhelds are all but done now.

I was laughed at and abused when I said Sony should charge for online ealry last gen. The fact they added services to make this palatable isn't relevant, its all about softening people for the future which is a paid for service that is built around digital, including streaming.

Gaming will be a service one day.  That day isnt so far away.

I agree with everything, but Sony charging for online early last gen would have been really bad for them in my opinion. Live was leagues ahead of PSN. PSN being free was its only redeeming factor/selling point. Later on in the gen PSN caught up, but even then it would have been difficult to suddenly charge for a service that people have been getting for free for a while. The PS4 is a new device so charging for its online was ok for most people.

This could be the beginning of the end.

Intriguing. Don't know what else to think about it atm.
I do hope that the part about new and original games for mobile platforms means the mainline games will stay on their own dedicated hardware.

The new membership is a no-brainer. We're moving towards a future where every decent-sized publisher will have a service/platform of their own so some kind of Nintendo service was to be expected really.

Very risky, Iwata. Very risky.

this is probably the least risky venture Nintendo has attempted in the past 5 years. Such low cost with the potential sales that far exceed any of their current platforms.

Been saying that for a long time now, now is when a great deal have started agreeing, I believe Kowen, Gamerace and a couple of others were the only ones who felt the same way back then (2011-2012 or so).

This is actually Nintendo thinking ahead, perhaps even ahead of the competition in some ways and the immense rise in the stock pretty much shows that investors think the same. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that everything is executed well this time around!

I think I have to say it, I didn't expect this.

But i am glad to see Michael Pachter right.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
