Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo and mobile company DeNA form alliance, will make apps featuring Nintendo IP

I don't think this is half bad of an idea. Putting games like Pokemon Shuffle on phones won't really hurt them. Going full mobile would be idiotic though.

Plus, this might allow casual gamers to easily recognize Nintendo's IPs once more, and if even a fraction of them become interested in the next Mario/Zelda/Pokemon game as a result, then I think it's worth it.

There is the potential for this to work.

They have been clear that they will not be bringing their full fledged retail titles to mobile, but rather create new games built with smartphones in mind. People will still need to buy a Nintendo system to play the next 3D Mario, epic Zelda, or Pokemon RPG.
If they can insulate the mobile and dedicated divisions from each other, they could co-exist, like home consoles and handhelds have done since the 80s. Mobile provides additional revenue stream while maintaining awareness of their brands, dedicated systems continue to provide the kind of full fat gaming experiences Nintendo are loved for.

There were concerns when Nintendo ventured into DLC, yet that didn't turn out as bad as many feared. This could be a similar case where the reality is a lot less scary than our expectations.

Maybe you're right. I certainly hope so!

Nintendo will show how you can make smartphone games with a lot of substance and great controls, I'm looking forward to Rayman-style platformers :).

I legitimately think it's impossible to create a platformer with "great controls" on a touch device.

Well I think both Rayman games on smartphone/tablet has succeded in a massive way, those are some of the better platformers I have played in the last years.

Gratz. Step one to become 3rd party successfully completed :)

As usual, Nintendo is lagging several years behind Sony and Microsoft on this front.

I had to comprehend this for a bit but I can see the benefits of this, if they don't just go full mobile. The smartphone market is huge and trying to get some business out of it doesn't seem to be a bad decision.

Or this just confirms that they replaced Iwata with a look alike idk. I'm still confused honestly.

Imagine if they made a game similar to Puzzle and Dragons with Pokemon, it could rake in a fortune for Nintendo and in no way hurt their handheld business. In fact it would only benefit it bringing more attention to the franchise.

I totally expect high scale games like Animal Crossing and a main Pokemon game to be released on smartphones. Just imagine how much a Pokemon game would sell to a user base of billions. And it's not like they are too complex to play on a smartphones. They don't need buttons to play.

They won't bring any main series Pokemon game to mobile. Pokemos is its main system seller, they move it to mobile, and Nintendo will have to abandon the handheld scene.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm really sad right now...I certainly won't be buying any of their mobile games.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

Nintendo is also introducing a online membership service.

"Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services"

So they are coming into the game (pun intended) about a decade too late then? They really haven't learned much at all, it seems. Also; I will laugh pretty hard if this has a monthly or annual fee.
