Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo is still against annual franchises

Pokemon is annual... but I guess it technically isn't completely under Nintendo

We get a BRAND NEW Pokemon (main series) game every 2 or so years. Most of the games we get in the main series are either remakes or Version 3 of the same game (neither of which take nearly as much time or resources to make). If your just following brand new main games, though, it is by far NOT an annual series.

Yeah, I'm aware but if you are nitpicking, you could technically say that a 'main' Pokemon game(s) comes out ever year :P

they r talking about 5 zelda games on wiu or 3ds not a game on different systems. remakes don't count. using the same engine 5 times. if  the system is successful u may see 2 games. they will never be like cod or assasins creed.

A game like mario kart should be getting 2 games a gen. It probably would on the Wii U if it stayed on the market for 7 or 8 years withouta successor.

I really don't see why Mario Kart (or something like Smash Bros) needs two games a gen. I'm perfectly fine with one game and free DLC throughout the generation for a game like that (since Nintendo games are full price for entire generations.) Something like The Legend of Zelda or Metroid would be nice to have more than one game per generation (per console) but of course they are the most intensive games to produce. I like having one game from every Nintendo series in each generation, and hopefully they can increase their output to achieve that.

Nintendo would make more money with 2 a gen. That's a good observation and I'm sure fans would want more story based games releasing.

I think annual franchises can be good, providing the games are suitable for it of course. Stuff like Mario Kart really is better to just have one per console though, preferably with ocassional DLC tracks/karts/characters to keep it going through out the gen though.

I suppose if it is annual, you should have 3 devs. commit to the same series; one dev. making the game that year, and the other developing the other two. That way, each dev has 3 three years of dev. time for the same game. Here's hoping though Black Ops III doesn't buck Call of Duty's recent upward trend.

Sure, but they might oversaturate the market and have it backfire. Also, the advantage might not be so high (if they only make one Mario Kart game that liberates them to develop a different game which can sell consoles and sell in itself.)

Do the same dev teams work on most of their games?  is nintendo like Ubisoft or is it more like sony.

They frequently release many games from the same series over the gen. But it's true that others only get one game per gen. It seems like one extreme to the other. Give me one example. Keep in mind: Mario Kart 8 is not the same as Super Mario 3D World which is not the same as New Super Mario Bros. U.

I guess you could make the claim for Pokémon, but Game Freak isn't owned by Nintendo.

This generation:

Pikmin: one game on the Wii U

2D Mario platformer: two games on the Wii U (one of which is a level creator, thus fundamentally different) and one on the 3DS

3D Mario platformer: one game on the Wii U and one on the 3DS.

Fire Emblem: two games on the 3DS (first one released in 2012, the second one will release in 2015).

Luigi's Mansion: one game on the 3DS.

Zelda: two games on the Wii U (one of which is a remake) and 3 on the 3DS (two of which are remakes).

Mario Kart: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS.

Donkey Kong Country: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS (a Wii port).

Mario Party: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS.

Animal Crossing: one game on the 3DS.

Paper Mario: one game on the 3DS.

Mario & Luigi: one game on the 3DS.

Yoshi: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS.

Xenoblade: one game on the Wii U and one game on the N3DS (Wii port).

Super Smash Bros.: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS.

Star Fox: one game on the Wii U and one game on the 3DS (a remake).

More like Sony, but each developer is responsible for more than one series.

EAD 1 is mostly responsible for Mario Kart (but other studios help like Retro and Intelligent Systems.) They are also responsible for Nintendogs. More developers to make another Mario Kart would cost money and/or time from other studios.

And i like Nintendo more for it.

Anual sequels are the same as signing an obituary for a series.

pokemon, zelda and mario. yes many are different types of games or remakes but it's no different to the halo series having an RTS game or the MCC.
