I wondered about this back during the initial Win10 announcement. I think Xbox will still be a thing, but it probably won't be in the same form as it is now.

| foodfather said: The only way this could happen, is if MS want to take a stab a Steam. Its not going to work. Xbox is the only real success story for MS on the hardware side. It will stick around. |
It depends upon how you look at it: the brand is a success (What cave dweller hasn't heard of XBox?), but the product platform is a failure (No BoD would take consistent departmental losses, year-on-year, lightly.). Sometimes, I wonder if the former is MS' real objective: find a away (even at a loss) to establish a presence in consumers' homes. It worked extremely well for Apple, who is now in the process of effectively unifying their platforms (albeit without the significant losses).

R&D starts the day after your console is released. Any manufacturer should be planning for their next system by now.

Yes. This is why PSNow has such a limited release. Currently US/Canada, 2015 parts of Europe, Japan....who knows?

Your comment reminds me of dreamcast situation. Dont let the love of a console maker to spoil the fun. You will always have good options.

As long as they make good on there Windows 10 gaming support, it's a WIN/WIN. That being said, I'm sure Microsoft already had doubts based on the Xbox One's inital reaction. It's incredibily likely that the decision has already been made by the new CEO. It could go either way. There is always the posibility that Microsoft beefs up it's internal developers and pulls a PS3 shift. I would love it if Microsoft takes that route, 3rd party exclusives don't show long term investment.

I'm actually predicting that this will be the last consoles for Sony and MS. After Rio and PSNow get on firm enough legs they will both be done with physical consoles. Nintendo will probably end up making 2 more consoles before finally going streaming and mobile.

Exactly. If you really like the xbox one you should at least like the playstation. If Microsoft left sony would have nearly every game Microsoft currently does plus many more they currently don't.
The Xbox One Controversy about the inability to play used games is a proof that people want to have control over their games, they want to have the possibility to trade their games or give it to his friends, and not just have the permission to access to a games that's it would be stupid to make games just a service.
PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m
Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Agreed.
| Nuvendil said: I think this is quite possible. There have always been a lot of people in MS who disliked the Xbox product line because the brand, as a whole over its lifetime, has never been profitable, despite instances of profit at different points. One major force behind the persistence of Xbox I think was the vision originally put forward by Bill Gates of the smart, fully connected home with a hub acting as the nerve center. I think Xbox was meant to head in that direction, becoming a hub rather than just a gaming device. But with those elements of Xbox One failing to impress and more and more multimedia features being absorbed into smart TVs, I think MS is about ready to give up on the hub notion. With those two points in mind, there may be a sentiment in the upper echelon that staying in the hardware business serves no practical purpose. A lot of people wave off the losses Xbone is causing with the reasoning that MS is wealthy and can absorb the losses so it's not a big deal. The truth is the opposite: MS is wealthy and stable today because throughout their history they have considered sustained losses in departments a very big deal. I think we just may be at a tipping point for the bosses at MS where Xbox is concerned. |
Bad move. It'd make Sony a monopoly in the gaming market (Nintendo has pretty much lost it as least for now). The real reason Microsoft came into the market was to crush Sony. It came close last gen, but now its just a running buddy. And at this point there's no point in selling off or spinning off the Xbox division. Sure they'd make a bit more $$$ here and there, but that only really matters to investors, and to consumers its kinda a backstab. Anyway so no I don't think Microsoft will leave the market for a LONG time!
