Forums - Gaming - Last Xbox console?? (Theory)

If this is the case, then that means that the PS4 would be the last Playstation console as well considering Sony's push for streaming services and games.

Sony are no doubt heading that way and are already ahead of Microsoft with ps now.  The problem with your post is that Sony are on track to sell over 100m PS4'S and Microsoft will do well to even sell half the number of PS4s meaning a PS5 would likely be very profitable and worth doing.

Whille I agree that the PS4 is selling well and will probably continue to sell well, saying that it's on track this early in a genertaion is more like wishful thinking on your part. There are several factors that can easily change this, such as one being how long this console generation actually lasts.

Also, your comment contradicts itself with that last part considering the fact that the PS2 was the most sold console of its generation but then the Xbox 360 came out the next generation and was outselling the PS3 globally on a constant basis. Just because one console is successful doesn't mean the next will continue the trend. Just look at Wii to Wii U.

If this generation is short(4 years), then there will be another Xbox. If it goes long(6+ years) there will be no need.

Same goes for a PS5, but I think Sony would be required to sell one as they don't have the infrastructure(owning the main OS) to support their brand. Sure, They will stream, but thats the whole point, they wouldn't need to have a console at all then...

Since the ps3 released it outsold the 360 every year.  It didn't close the gap by getting outsold WW. Personally I don't see why sony would be motivated to start a new gen any sooner than the ps3 and ps4 gap. They will maximise profits a hell of a lot more by going 8 or 9 years instead of 5 or 6. And the ps4 will keep selling well long after the ps5 comes out. It's 20% of the way to 100m and that's without so many of its biggest games even releasing.  100m is locked on IMO.

I think it's disingenuous to say that the Xbox "destroyed" the PS at any point. The X360 launched a year earlier than the PS3, and the PS3 manages to outsell it.

I never said they "destroyed" Playstation. I said they dominated the market until the last few years. It doesn't matter if it's because PS3 launched late. The fact was there were more Xbox 360 owners than PS3 owners until the last few years of the last gen consoles.

"Second bolded point: They got destroyed with the Xbox. The dominated with the Xbox 360 (until the last few years, but still an excellent product). They're not admiting defeat. They did things wrong with this console. They'll (hopefully) learn from it."

Please explain what you meant.

They (Microsoft) got destroyed with the Xbox. They (Microsoft) dominated (had majority control) with the Xbox 360 until the last few years (where PS3 overtook it in sales).

I am genuinely confused as to why you are confused.

That probably coincides with Sony's planned Playstation stream service.
Oh Nintendo, sometimes I'm glad you're stuck in the past "<3"

ldn't be more wrong. There will always be traditional consoles. Well, at least for at least 1 or two more console generations. There will always be a market for consoles as long as it cost less tobuy a console than to buy a similarly spwcced PC and that consoles remain plug and play.

The rise of things like steam boxes and android consoles is just livibg proof of this. Steamboxes are basically the first steps in the consolization of PCs and I think MS is trying to redirect its focus now to cash in on that. Basically, with windows 10 you won't need steam OS. Windows 10 makes the PC as pkig and play as possible when connected to a HDTV instead of a monitor.

I never said their replacements would be PCs or Android machines. I think that PS Now will succeed the PS4, and whatever Microsoft is doing now is a step towards a similar future, most likely through XBL. The only reason I think Nintendo won't be doing the same thing next generation is because they don't have the foundation or resources to do it. Also, they extually have a successful handheld that complicates things.

Only collectors and nostalgics want physical consoles. Most people only want the games.

The original poster was referring to the PS brand as a whole (not specific consoles), and it appeared as if this was your retort to his contention. I see that you're talking about the console, not the brand.

This gen can't be shirt. and anytime I see someone say this it just makes me feel they don't have a realistic handle on how the industry works.

No one likes the idea of tossing away a user base only to jump start a new generation and spend tons more money. Especially publishers. And more importantly, what does a short gen mean? a short gen (next gen starts 2017, just two years from now) will mean that there will be a far less noticeable jump in hardware between this gen and the next one. Hell, if that happens the next gen consoles will still be 1080p consoles and probably have no more than 8/12GB of RAM. There will be absolutely zero logical reason to start a new gen with consoles that don't differentiate themselves in anyway what so ever.

The reason and only reason MS could JumpStart a new gen from XB to 360 was simply cause then we were looking at the obvious jump from SD to HD. Today majority of the games released can even run on last gen hardware.

PSnow won't/can't replace the PS5/XB2 for the same reason the PS4/XB1 still come with disc drives. Unless you think everyone in the world will have access to 5Mb/s internet speeds by 2019/2020.

Well, if the XB1's sales don't recover over the next year, that alone may be enough reason.  M$ could release a system(lets call it an XB2) that is 4k compatible(2.5 years from now) that uses the identical software(thats the point of Win10) and juice up the specs.  This would allow all games on it to be scalable.  On the XB, it plays 900p/1080p and 30fps.  ON the XB2, it outputs at 4k and a minimum of 60fps.  It wouldn't have any optical drive and a stillsmall 500gb HD, as they are now selling it as a cloud based unit.  Probably the 12 GB of ram that you speak to.  THey can continue to sell the XB1 for a budget machine and the XB2 as the Premium unit.  Both machines offer the same software...

Doubt it will happen, but you never know.

It is near the end of the end....

I have been saying the same thing for quite a while, I was sure that XOne is the last MS console over a year ago.
All the moves Microsoft has been making recently point to their focus shifting away from consoles, and nobody should be surprised if XOne starts getting phased out soon.
