If this generation is short(4 years), then there will be another Xbox. If it goes long(6+ years) there will be no need.

Same goes for a PS5, but I think Sony would be required to sell one as they don't have the infrastructure(owning the main OS) to support their brand. Sure, They will stream, but thats the whole point, they wouldn't need to have a console at all then...

This gen can't be shirt. and anytime I see someone say this it just makes me feel they don't have a realistic handle on how the industry works.

No one likes the idea of tossing away a user base only to jump start a new generation and spend tons more money. Especially publishers. And more importantly, what does a short gen mean? a short gen (next gen starts 2017, just two years from now) will mean that there will be a far less noticeable jump in hardware between this gen and the next one. Hell, if that happens the next gen consoles will still be 1080p consoles and probably have no more than 8/12GB of RAM. There will be absolutely zero logical reason to start a new gen with consoles that don't differentiate themselves in anyway what so ever.

The reason and only reason MS could JumpStart a new gen from XB to 360 was simply cause then we were looking at the obvious jump from SD to HD. Today majority of the games released can even run on last gen hardware.

Well, if the XB1's sales don't recover over the next year, that alone may be enough reason.  M$ could release a system(lets call it an XB2) that is 4k compatible(2.5 years from now) that uses the identical software(thats the point of Win10) and juice up the specs.  This would allow all games on it to be scalable.  On the XB, it plays 900p/1080p and 30fps.  ON the XB2, it outputs at 4k and a minimum of 60fps.  It wouldn't have any optical drive and a stillsmall 500gb HD, as they are now selling it as a cloud based unit.  Probably the 12 GB of ram that you speak to.  THey can continue to sell the XB1 for a budget machine and the XB2 as the Premium unit.  Both machines offer the same software...

Doubt it will happen, but you never know.

It is near the end of the end....
