Sony are no doubt heading that way and are already ahead of Microsoft with ps now.  The problem with your post is that Sony are on track to sell over 100m PS4'S and Microsoft will do well to even sell half the number of PS4s meaning a PS5 would likely be very profitable and worth doing.

Whille I agree that the PS4 is selling well and will probably continue to sell well, saying that it's on track this early in a genertaion is more like wishful thinking on your part. There are several factors that can easily change this, such as one being how long this console generation actually lasts.

Also, your comment contradicts itself with that last part considering the fact that the PS2 was the most sold console of its generation but then the Xbox 360 came out the next generation and was outselling the PS3 globally on a constant basis. Just because one console is successful doesn't mean the next will continue the trend. Just look at Wii to Wii U.

Since the ps3 released it outsold the 360 every year.  It didn't close the gap by getting outsold WW. Personally I don't see why sony would be motivated to start a new gen any sooner than the ps3 and ps4 gap. They will maximise profits a hell of a lot more by going 8 or 9 years instead of 5 or 6. And the ps4 will keep selling well long after the ps5 comes out. It's 20% of the way to 100m and that's without so many of its biggest games even releasing.  100m is locked on IMO.
