Forums - Gaming - Do you get emotionally attached to video game characters?

This lil gal here:

Definitely got a Toy Story vibe by the end of it.

The last time I got emotionally attached to a character it was Kaim from Lost Odyssey. But its a little strange. I really didn't care much for him when in the game itself. But when he slept and we could see the dreams? It was just text detailing a memory from his past in the form of a dream, but it was incredible. I teared up many times through that. But when the dream was over? I was back to the detachment again. For a while anyway.

Of course! The Last of Us is the most obvious recent example, starting with the damn prologue. I also had Majora's Mask recently, which was rather surprising, because I wasn't expecting to care about any character in the Zelda series =P

I find myself a rather empathetic person. I usually find myself avoiding movies that have waaaaaaay too depressing endings. If it's a depressing story with at least a bittersweet ending, it's fine. But throw me a downer ending, and I'll feel pretty bad myself.

I also see myself getting way too sad when the plot involves a dog dying, for some reason. I see a bunch of people dying in movies and stuff and I'm fine, but the moment I see a dog passing away... that story just became a tearjerker for me. It's strange...

I've never been " emotionally attached" to a video game character and that probably won't change anytime soon.

Meh I don't care what a guy says on the internet.

I feel sad when I see the news and see all the poverty and killing around the world. I feel sad for my friends and family when stuff happens to them.

But fictional characters? they aren't real, so their pain doesn't affect me in the slightest.

I am very sorry if you felt offended. That wasnt my intention at all. I just think you are not letting yourself immerse in those worlds for some reason. If you dont let yourself, you cant feel attached to the characters.

Why dont you try playing said games and enjoying them. I think you will feel a closer connection than watching lets plays narrated by someone and chopped into bits that break the imersion. You have to play them by yourself, without thinking about what any of this means in the real world.

Of course I do, just like i can feel attached and cry about a character in a movie or by reading a book.
I'd be dead inside if I couldn't

And what would be the point of following through with a story if i cant empathise with any of what's happening?

Storytelling would be pointless if it's just for you to process it like information as a computer would do and not letting it have any sort of impact on you as a person.

As anyone here seen the movie Equilibrium? I love this scene where Christian Bale's character hears music for the first time and it moves him to tears.

That movie was basically about a society where anything that might cause an emotional reaction was eradicated and people are drugged to numb their emotional response. Literature, art and music are banned. Totally recommend it, it's a 2002 movie.

no.

but if you ever say something bad about john marston i will fucking cut your tits off.

Definitely, Fiora in Xenoblade would be my prime example, but I also felt strongly attached to all of the characters in Tales of Xillia. Funnily enough, Hiyoko was my absolute favourite in Danganronpa... such a shame...
