Forums - Nintendo - Since Wii U failed, what should Nintendo have done to follow up the Wii's success?

Could Nintendo have realistically produced another Wii-like success?

Yes. Nintendo magic. Just not the Wii U. 131 28.85%

No. Wii was a one time th... 262 57.71%

Yo Mama 61 13.44%

Total:454

they could have, however they did a lot of things wrong. the name of the system, the marketing, the fact that is has a strange tablet complicated controller, the limited game library on release, etc. etc.

honestly if they had just went more basic it would have worked better I think: good spec system, regular fun controller (ala Gamecube) that the casuals could get into, maybe release the system WITH Mario Kart.

I'm sorry but that is not as true as you think. "Fanboys" were not enraged by the success or at the very lest few were. I think people, and I woudl say the sales of the WIi U back up this statement; simply werent satisfied with the Wii. It got way too much shovelware and if im being frank the biggest selling point motion controls kinda sucked.

So lets be honest with ourselves would a clerk really recommend a Wii knowing it was missing a bunch of major games or got crappy versions of some. ANd the system was way behind not just tech wise? Nobody cares who wins what they just care that the system delivers I think for alot of people Wii didnt deliver if it did more would have returned.

Nintendo should have used more of the money they were making to invest in traditional Nintendo games for the Wiiu to better satisfy the core games who bought the system.  They instead are having to waste a generation rebuilding their rep now so they can improve their standing next gen.

true but to be fair, they had to support 3ds as well.

As a consumer I don´t feel WiiU as a fail at all, I´m very happy with the quality of the games and i´m terribly exited about the games that are coming, so i´m very glad with my WiiU, I used to play only on PC las years and now is like 80% WiiU 20% PC, so in quality terms as a consumer WiiU is nothing  but a sucess.

Come on dude. Like 20 people have clealry stated in this theard what Nintendo's mistakes were with the Wii U and they aren't going to get banned. Its when you do it in mean spirted matter that gets you banned lol.

I guess so, but it's hard to not be mean spirited about something that frustrates me so much.

I'm now filled with determination.

Competitive hardware, no stupid tablet, clear to distinguish name, adult games, 3rd party risk funding, Wii Sports HD instead of Nintendoland, real Mario or Zelda game on day one.

Nintendo did many things wrong with the WiiU sadly, like the name, the piss-poor marketing ( funny how we went from " Wii would like to play!" to jackshit), the specs (they managed to get away with poor specs with the Wii, because you know why) and other things.. At least they did a great job in the game department, that's where Ninty deserves some props!

I think had they found a better middle ground between the Wii motion control and a standard control, they could have done better. Or even just managed to get a better implementation of what they were trying to do with the Wii U in having a controller with a built second screen (such as the option for multiple Gamepads to be used on one Wii U locally, better and more promoted 3DS connectivity, more games that use it in unique ways, etc) the Wii U would have done better.

Instead they tried to be a jack of all trades at cost, which left them looking cheap and undesirable to all but the most hardcore of Nintendo fans.

I never expected the Wii U to get the success of the Wii, but initially thought they could carry it to about 80 million consoles LT

Thanks for all the great memories!

most of what you said is quite inaccurate. it's okay to list mistakes, just don't exaggerate.

I am pretty sure what I have said is very accurate but since you don't believe me for some reason, lets go step by step through it. Oh and the only thing I exaggerated was on the zero third party support (and maybe the triggers) but honestly, considering how many gimped ports its got with a lack of DLC as well as many other things such as Rayman Legends being delayed and going multiplat and a lot of the games being old ports, I don't consider it much support at all.

So lets start, the launch price... At $350 for a console that is consideribly less powerful than the ps4, that price would not justify the purchase from most consumers. As a result, after the launch/holiday rush, the sales tanked to a crawl. You can simply look that up at vgc

Next is the concept. The wiiU's tablet concept is very flawed because a) Its not very portable which tablets are supposed to be due to the wireless signal range b) A low powered console is not a good idea when you expect people to pay $350 during launch... Heck, it can't even support an external hard drive through one usb port, it needs two usb ports for an external hard drive that doesn't have its own power supply. c) While I love the gamepad's 0 latency streaming, the cost of the gamepad + the console raised the price for an experience that is clearly not worth it in the eyes of the public. d) Having both a console and a tablet raised the price up instead of having one or the other e) If they wanted to go with portable tablet gaming, it would have potentically butchered the 3ds sales or vice versa so this tablet thing isn't really a good concept overall in the eyes of the majority

Hard Drive Space... This is an easy one. The Deluxe Model came with 32GB of internal space and the Basic Model came with 8GB of internal space. Considering games now a days have 50GB average of install space, a lot of third party games wouldn't even fit on the wiiU's hard drive. And before you say "oh, people can just buy their own external hard drive," that mediology is very unreliable for a developer because as soon as you expect the consumer to have something that is not included in the console, then u are just setting ur self up for a whack load of issues. Because if the consumer doesn't have an external hard drive and wants to buy your game, if he/she purchased it and can't play it, then u will be giving them refunds and they will be veryyy pissed. And not to mention that a ps3/360 during that time would come with 250GB or 500GB of internal storage space

The Tech is also flawed... Low power that requires two USB ports for external hard drives that don't have its own power supply, two usb ports for gamecube adapter, a wireless signal that has trouble going through more than one room, no ethernet port so you have to use wifi, very old version of the PowerPC architecture and many other things.

Post launch e3 was an easy one too... They didn't have a regular press conference cause it was an e3 Direct... They didn't go up on stage at e3 and do their thing so idk why you would think thats incorrect

The update in Day 1 during launch was giant... It was not only 1GB, since it was launch day, it took forever to download for many people. And the wiiU update took me 40 minutes to download when I got the update. Not even the ps4's day 1 update was that big, it was 308 MBs... And here is some more proof:

http://kotaku.com/5965551/the-wii-us-infamous-day-one-update-will-be-around-for-a-while

http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/13/5098848/playstation-4s-day-one-patch-is-available-to-download-now

I don't get why you bolded wiiU's gamepad's battery life cause it is 5 hours... Don't believe me? Then believe Nintendo

https://www.nintendo.com/consumer/latam/en/systems/wiiu/system_wiiu_gamepad.jsp?menu=power_and_battery&submenu=wup-gamepad-ht-charge

And the triggers are bad cause unlike the ps3 or 360 or ps4 or x1, there is no sensitivity on the triggers... So either its on or off and there is no % in between

So yea, I am pretty sure I am right for most of those things and I exaggerated on one thing, maybe two if u count the triggers but it wasn't even that highly exaggerated...

First, it's $299 for a console not that much less powerfull than ps4, in a time where ps4 didn't exist.

There's no tablet concept, it's a controller with a screen that was never supposed to be used outside the house. Also, wii u isn't a low powered console.

You keep repeating the word tablet and there's no way the gamepad increased the final price by a huge amount. a couple dozen dollars, at most.

Install space? games aren't supposed to be installed, they should run from the disc. hard drive space was always meant for digital download purposes, meaning a 32 gb saves money for those who won't buy many digital games. the people that are into digital can buy an external drive, wich ends the same as buying a more expensive concole with a bigger hard drive.

What exactly was wrong with their E3 2013, since they showed more focus on games than the competitors, as usual?

The triggers and update are VERY minor issues, especially the update, wich is long gone.

Step 1: Don't give up on your system (the Wii) when hardware and software sales are still so high.
Step 2: Once the time has come for a follow-up, build on your success instead of rejecting it.

The sales of the Wii and Wii U are so far apart that nobody has to set goals like "Nintendo's system has to be sold out in the single-biggest video game market of the world for over two years in order to constitute a success". Continuity is where Nintendo dropped the ball, hence the huge difference between these two generations. Based on the sales of Wii software, you can figure which games should have had utmost priority and required AAA treatment, but Mario Kart is the only IP where Nintendo bothered and that came long after they hammered it into the heads of Wii consumers that they are second rate consumers at best. Additionally, if Nintendo had honored the Wii, then the Gamepad could have never become the standard controller.

This is the only post in this thread which matters, quite frankly.
