Forums - Gaming - What would you guys think of a 30fps/60fps toggle on most console games?

I'm not sure if any other settings change, but I know that shadow resolution increases at 30fps. So you're actually incorrect on that front.

My apologies. This does mainly apply to games that target 30fps, rather than games that target 60fps but I conceed your point. I would like to see this become mainstream.

No you were right imo, TLOU is not a accurate game to display what you said in the OP.

TLOU is by default a 60fps game not 30fps, the 30fps option was only there for the odd people who think 60fps feels weird and the better shadows is only there because 30 frames of power is being wasted for literally zero reason. It probably only took a day too implement the higher shadows anyway, kinda like a "whatever may as well" type of thing.

Also if a 30fps game was compromised to be 60fps, higher shadows is no where near the only thing that would need a downgrade to achieve 60fps

The biggest problems is that it isn't as easy as it looks. It's not a trivial task to improve framerate because it can be bottlenecked by CPU or any of the several subsets of GPU capabilities. Even on PC, you won't do that: games will flutuate the framerate around the average value, so the best shot of getting it all times would be aim to a 70-75 fps average and V-sync everything while praying that you won't get stuttering anyway.

You could think about the console game development process as a "PC graphics settings screen" that could define different settings for all areas. A good example is Metro Last Light: on my PC the framerate is around 50 to 60 fps in the tunnels and all metro combat areas. Outside, it will oscillate between 25-40 fps, hovering around 30 most of the time. In the end, I could use higher setting on the tunnels, but the outside areas would be unplayable. The PS4 version gets locked 60fps, simply because they tunned each area to get the best visuals they could.

The point is: managing framerate is hard, you have several bottlenecks and stuttering and tearing are possible side effects. To get the best performance of the hardware, it's better to be consistent with your goals. The only game that does it is TLOUR, a port of a PS3 game with last gen lightning, last gen geometry and a last gen engine that simply doesn't look nowhere as good as 8th gen titles.

TLOU doesn't change graphical settings to achieve 60fps.

It does. In 30fps it presents better shadows.

This has been pointed out earlier, that was my bad.

It would take more work, but if you designed the games visuals around the idea of it running 30fps, and optimised it for such. having an option that lowes the texture quality and lighting effects, AA, rendering distance etc to get the fps to climb up I'm not sure I see the problem into what would make it such an impossible task? It's not like PC versions where you can have 100's different configs for your visuals.

It's not that easy. GPUs are complex, and have several bottlenecks. The game could even be CPU bound so all these changes wouldn't give you a single extra frame. You can lower the texture quality and just get marginal improvements because your frame time is limited by another factor.

It can be done? Yes. But it will add a considerable dev time to tune in again all areas of the game and test it all over again. Unless it gives you 30, 40 or 50% more sales is just a pointless and huge expense.

Yes why not

what do i think of an idea to make developers do very unnecessary work adding to the cost of development to let to appease forum trolls who bitch incessantly about mundane worthless shit like frame rate?

i think it is beyond unnecessary and people have forgotten how to have fun playing games these days.

No, either full graphics options menu or nothing. Having to choose between 2 shitty compromises is worse than just having one standard.

I'd rather decide for myself which graphical components I want on lower settings.

It's because it makes things simple and a full graphics menu would probably make the console experience less optimised. It also may be confusing for many users who don't know what the difference between AA, FXAA, MSAA, or SSAO, HBAO+ etc. At that point you may aswell go PC.

The user who doesn't know about graphics shouldn't care about fps anyway.

You always have presets in graphics options for the less experienced anyway.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I actually want PC graphic configs on consoles. Than I wouldn't care wtf they set the game up as.

Being able to tell the difference between 30/60 and deciding you like 60 better doesn't mean you know what SSAO is.

It sounds simple enough and I feel eventually we will have console games doing it. One option with 30fps@1080p and all the eye candy you can wave a stick at and another at 60fps@720p with toned down everything and maybe even a cost free post process AA like FXAA then let gamers decide what they would prefer. Though I fear a lot has to be changed to support that option.
