Forums - Gaming - What would you guys think of a 30fps/60fps toggle on most console games?

Regardless if it went up to 60 or not, the game has the feature that you're asking about. As in locking framerate, or making it unlimited.

No it doesn't. That's not what he's talking about. He said 60. Only you say unlimited. Unlimited isn't good enough.

What is wrong with 30fps, also it would an unfair advantage to people running at 60 fps. This 30 vs 60 fps has to stop. Yes 60 is better but 30 is fine. And where will it stop next gen it will be we want 120 fps.

If this was the case PC games wouldn't be allowed to go to 120fps because it would be 'unfair' for those who don't have 120hz monitors/TV's. That is a null point. This option give people choice. Therefore you can play at 30fps because you believe it to be 'fine' this doesn't take that option away from you.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

When main stream TVs are 120htz as a standard, we damn sure better be getting 120fps games. Everything is wrong with 30fps.

An unfair advantage!? You've got to be joking. That's like saying Rodger Federer has an unfair advantage because Rafael Nadal shot himself in the foot.

inFamous Second Son does that.

As does The Last of Us Remastered.

To answer the OP, though, I think we need to leave it up to devs to decide if this is worth implementing. It requires optimising for two different ways of playing, which takes resources and time. It also may conflict with the way a dev thinks their game is best played. Ultimately, I believe in artistic control.

If they are making a PC version then surely it's very little extra work to establish 2 fixed settings for the console versions. Essentially you'd be looking at minimum PC Specs type performance for the 60fps and moderate PC specs type performance for the 30fps. For exclusives it's not quite the same.

I think giving people the option is a good idea, but typically as I only play SP games and pretty much ignore the MP component of all games I'd probably go for 30fps almost every time.

Then the people who want 60 will be at a disadvantage and some possibly becoming motion sick due to the restraint of people who want to stay stuck at 30 for the forseeable future, many games should be reaching 60fps by now, our eyes see more than that anyway throughout our life.

OT: I'd want FPS first but really when it comes to PC you should be getting both and not losing one or the other a lot of the time.

The topic says 60. You said Infamous does "that," refering to the topic.

The topic is also about having a toggle in games to change framerate.

I guess the topic is not about a game above 30 fps which has a "lock" option because many people don't like fluctuating framerates but games that are locked 30 for visual eye-candy and another option for 60 fps which would mean visuals to be cut back significantly.

so what you are saying is if I'm running a game online at 120 fps and you are running at 60fps we will see things at the same time? Wrong, I will see things before you, it maybe a millisecond I'm too lazy to do the math but it is an advantage, how ever small, then if you get into pings and it will come down to who has the highest framerate and bed ping. And my point will be proved when Microsoft launch cross platform gaming with pc and xbox one. Then we will know for sure.

old skool

id always pick 30fps

I am *NOT* thinking of a typical PC style graphic’s settings menu.

What I’m referring to is a simple checkbox that says 30fps and one that says 60fps and the 60fps toggle makes whatever visual compromises needed (predetermined by devs) for the game to run at 60fps.

This is for those who would choose 60fps over a loss in visual quality or those who would choose 30fps for an increase in visual quality.

Please let me know if this is insane and why it would never work as I may be missing something here, but it sounds simple to me.

I don't think this will happen as it would take way more effort for devs to keep either locked. This means devs would develop for both targets and you have to take in designers so you don't cut off elements that should still be there.

I don't say you then have to develop the game twice but the effort to give you both options is way too high and won't bring much more money, if any.

no its more like saying Rafael nadal got sand in his eyes. Look we will find out when cross platform gaming launches on the xbox one,
