It sounds simple enough and I feel eventually we will have console games doing it. One option with 30fps@1080p and all the eye candy you can wave a stick at and another at 60fps@720p with toned down everything and maybe even a cost free post process AA like FXAA then let gamers decide what they would prefer. Though I fear a lot has to be changed to support that option.
