I always thought the whole reason behind RE control scheme was because of the limitation of the PS so to help improved framerate. ( there's also the fact the D-pad was still used for most PS games) As in PS days you were lucky to get 30 fps in most games. There was a Dino series (forgot the name) and then Onimusha which also had these controls. I was happy when I learn that the first DMC moved away from RE controls.

You mean to tell me even Wii RE4 still has the "tank-like controls" scheme? i was never a fan of these controls even back in the PS days. Even Onimusha for the PS2 had these controls which was very disappointing. |
You shouldn't get tank-like controls unless (maybe?) you use a gamecube controller.
i can understand the complaints about eh graphics if your steping down from teh ps3/360....but the controls?????
how could you not like pin point acc for knee caping and head shots......i mean whoa!!!

I'd say Metroid Prime 3 may fit the bill for you if graphics and controls are a concern. MP3 looks, plays and sounds great. I had a LOT of fun playing that game. Give it a rent and see if you like it TheRealMaFoo.
Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.
Mafoo, I'm sorry your thread turned out this way.
It could have been an interesting discussion of RE4 had it not turned out like this.

You're supposed to feel connected to the main character, not hamstrung by a poor control setup. There is nothing more annoying in a game than when you can't make your character do what you want him to do. It's funny, I read "official" reviews of the original RE4 for PS2, and they're all raving about how awesome the controls are because the camera is now over your character's shoulder. But I read the user reviews, and they say, yeah, the perspective is better than the fixed camera with prerendered backgrounds, but the controls are exactly the same, and just as bad. In just about every review I've seen, they mention the "tank controls" by that phrase -- one even used the phrase "Cumbersome Tank Control(tm)". This is obviously a long running notorious problem for the game series, which means that the developers have known that it was a problem since the first Resident Evil game. There's just no excuse for it, IMO. |
RE4Wii doesn't have "tank" control. Tank control is that you push up to move forward in the direction the character is looking and left/right to turn the character (really annoying in the earlier RE's, but it added a lot to the tension. RE4 has full 3D control, the direction you move the stick is the direction the character moves on screen.
I like RE4Wii VERY much. It's much better than the gamecube game (I like REmake more though). The ability for headshots/kneeshots and perfect aiming makes it a whole new game. Widescreen and 480p doesn't hurt either. In fact I really like the impossibility to walk and shoot at the same time. It ads to the "fear" which the games is all about. It's not supposed to be an action game.
So if you don't like it, it's probably because RE4Wii, despite it's action appearence, is still a survival-horror.
Too much to reply to with quoting text, so I will just address people and comment.
@ultraslick:
You nailed my intention perfectly. Thanks.
@Hawk:
Thanks for the apology. No worried though :). The controls being an issue was really a side note to this thread. I must have hit a nerve with Wii fans on that one. Sorry. I find the controls better, yet I have always hated the “run around, then stand still to shoot” controls. My only reason for commenting on it was I was hoping the Wii version would have totally eliminated my only complaint about the game (and why I never played it). I was trying to say while the controls improved it, it did not remove it all together.
@BrainBoxLtd:
LOL, no one has ever told me I look like that guy before. I should watch that movie. Loved the first, thought the second one was kind of lame, never saw the third.
@Gnizmo:
Thanks for the tip on hitting Z, I will try that. Also I do think Meroid Prime would fit my tastes better. I will try that game next.
@Entroper:
You and I have the same opinion about control schemes. I would have replied to some of these on that, but you covered everything I would have said.
@Zen:
I will hook it up to a smaller TV and play it one more time. Hopefully I can get past the controls and graphics, as I am sure the story is awesome if I could get into it. This kind of game can only be appreciated if you get immersed into the experience. When you have to fight with the controls (I seem to always want to move back and shoot, which then causes me to sit in one spot and look down), and look at the dated graphics, it keeps you from getting into it.
@jlauro:
I have a top end Sony TV. It does 1080p.It’s LCOS (Liquid Crystal over Silicon). They don’t make them anymore because the new DLP TV’s, for all practical purposes, produce the same image and cost a lot less to make. SMG looks perfect on the TV, as does everything else I have played on it. I think it’s just due to the textures. If I play it on a smaller TV, the low resolution of them won’t be noticeable.
@Words Of Wisdom:
The thread didn’t go too bad. I just seem to have hit a topic that most people are emotional about. No one has resorted to name calling, like I have seen on so many other threads. It’s all good
To everyone:
This is the first time I have played an RE game, and to everyone that say’s it’s great looking… I am sure you played the GC or PS2 versions. I know that when I fall in love with a game, if I go back even 5 years later, it still looks great to me because of the attachment I have to it. If you are seeing this game for the very first time, it’s a different story all together. What I meant by the “I will use my Wii for what it's great for, and play the PS3 for everything else” comment is if you are playing a game where submissiveness is the point (Uncharted, Gears, CoD4) for me the graphics are very important. In everyone of those games, there was a point where I forgot I was playing a game, and felt like I was involved in the action. Games like SMG, any fighting game like Brawl, Monkey Ball, Wii Sports, any puzzle game, and the like do not require this kind of emersion to be fun, so playing them on a system that struggles to produce that (imo) is no loss at all. This is where the Wii shines with its control system.
That’s what I meant by it. Games like DMC4, FF, Gears, Mass Effect, and the like I will play on an HD console. All the games like SMG, Sports games, and anything else where whaling a controller around in my living room with a big grin on my face sounds like fun, I will use the Wii.
To each, his own. RE4 was one of the games I bought when I bought my Wii. It took a little getting used to, but after an hour or so, it's obvious that the controls are WAY better! Guess everybody doesn't see things exactly the way I do, huh. I've learned something today.

I wouldn't call RE 4 great looking, but the controls are great and it's fun to play IMHO. I think the game gets more interesting the more you play it. I suggest you at least make it to chapter 2 (2-1, not 1-2) before deciding too much on the controls.
