Funny, I own a PS4 and none of my friends have one. Before launch, I asked everyone I knew. Co-workers, friends, acquantances and 360 friends. Every single one of them said Xbox One which absolutely blew my mind because of how horrible it was at the time (DRM nightmare etc.). It really pissed me off because I was dead set on a PS4 and really didn't want an Xbone. It really sucks when you're the only one of your friends and/or inner circle who has a system that no one else within said circle has. But alas, that's the boat I'm in. It blows, but I feel like I made the right choice for me. The PS4 just has the types of games I like the most.

Having said that, I don't think the PS4 is going to win the US. I think the 'Bone just has the marketing and types of games that attract the average US consumer. This is the land of the big, AAA FPS. This is the land of COD, Halo, Madden and games like that. Ever since 2001, the Xbox brand has had the shooter on lock down. Even now, COD AW on Xbox One is outselling COD AW on the PS4 in the US. To me, that just about says it all.

Ultimately, time will tell... but that's my opinion and my prediction. I think it'll be alot closer than it was last generation, but the 'Bone wins the US one last time for MS.

Sorry to here your friends didn't see the light, but I gotta say your group is far from the norm.  Of all of the "Groups" of friends I have come into contact with there has been a MASSIVE shift towards playstation.  Examples:

-Everyone in my group switched to PS4 (Almost all were Xbox  or "Both" last gen)

-Most in my brother's group switched (Again most xbox before)

-Everyone in my cousin's groups switched (Was about half and half last gen)

-At my college there are WAY more Playstations around than there used to be.

^Sales back this anecdotle evidence up.

As for COD and such - check the database for game sales in North America:

-COD:AW = Slight Xbox win in US.

-GTAV = PS4 win by almost 2:1

-Madden 15 = Solid PS4 win

-AC: Unity = Xbox Win by 2:1

So really even in just North America the PS4 is selling on average more AAA games, and these games came out when the X1 was crazy cheap during the holidays.  We don't even want to talk about the slaughter that was Watchdogs and such.

Just wait for the Slim release at $300 with Uncharted 4...

Well, my cousins rommates sister inlaw bought a WiiU.   So, the WiiU will win the Gen.

I agree that many people have bought a PS4 in the 1st year, as proven by the sales total.  But, it has been proven that in the last 90 days, that things have evened out in the US.  Sure, comparing sales totals of games released before the sales surge of the the XB1 will show the disparity.  How the multiplats perform when they don't have a "marketing deal" will show a little more.  Clearly, the PS4 has a stronger list of exclusives in the first 7-8 months and will have an obvious sales advantage for that period.

One thing to remember from last gen, is that lots of people like to buy both consoles(or all three).  So, by purchasing the PS4 first, doesn't mean they won't opt to buy the XB1 later.

As far as the $300 slim happening this year goes... Why?   Why would Sony release the slim and drop the price $100 when they are outselling the competition already?  They may release the Slim, but it might just be at $399 with a game or $349 with a game.  Sony needs every dollar that it can get and trying to win a meaningless console war is not reason enough to throw away the $$$.

It'll be harder for MS to continue dropping the price in the future as DDR3 RAM, eSRAM, and other customized silicon inside the Xbone continue to increase in price.

The only realistic strategy they have is to lose tens of billions of dollars this generation in order to stop as many 360 owners from switching to the PlayStation camp. There is no way that they will ever sell close to PS4, and Microsoft knows this. They need to retain as many people as possible (I'd say 40m LTD is a realistic possibility if they decide to lose $20 billion in total through more firesale deals) and then not screw up next generation.
Make a powerful Xbox TWO with no gimmicks.

My guess is that they will abandon Xbone support in 2-3 years time.

PS4 is winning by 500k against a console that has had massive bundles + large discounts/revisions without dropping their own price. Sounds pretty easy to me so far.

MS has slowed the slaughter and gained back a lot but has not been able to reverse the trend entirely(unless Amazon is wrong, which would be the biggest surprise of the gen)

PS4's lineup for the next 6 months should provide another large gap increase over the XBO. I'm guessing PS4's gap coming into BF will be larger than last year but PS4 will have much more leeway for bigger discounts/bundles than before.

Sony just needs to not let the X1 outsell the PS4 this holiday as much as it did last holidays. On top of having more exclusives, Sony has exclusive marketing with Battlefield: Hardline, Mortal Kombat X, and Batman: Arkham Knight. Microsoft does have exclusive marketing with Evolve and The Witcher III. However, Evolve has been quite under-the-radar and is also ridden with a lot of DLC. The Witcher III belongs to a genre that appeals more to the PS4 userbase than the X1 userbase (see Dragon Age: Inquisition).

Why release a $300 slim?  Because it would make them a ton of money.  I love how so many people think Sony is just going to roll over and let MS catch up.  They always release a slim around 2 years after the initial release.  Why would they not now?

How does selling the slim at cost make them a lot of money?  Do you think the slim will cost significantly less than $300?  You want to sell it at $300 and include a Game?  No money to be made that way.

The UK isn't a region. It's a country within the EU region.

But it HAS to be a region, DAMN IT!

Yes it does.  20nm APU's are doable now and they take up less room and use less power.  Less power means less expensive cooling, smaller and cheaper Power Supplies, and a much smaller overall package to ship.  These are big savings and the PS4 is already cheaper than the Xbox One to produce.

Most of their money comes from people paying for PS+ and games.  The more people that have a PS4 the more money they make.  Breaking even at $300 will make them a ton of money.

I think we're going to see the same things that had happened last year.
Playstation will outsell XBox all the time till the last couple of months of the year. In those few weaks MS will win the competition in the U.S and maybe UK.

I thought AMD/Global Foundries was going to use 14nm FINFET process this year.

That's more 2016.  AMD said they are going to use the 20nm now on consoles first.
