From what I've watched, it basically allows for free movement when out of battle, but when up tight, it switches to 2D mode. This offers a fusion between the freedom of free movement and the precision of 2D fighters. I think its a pretty interesting system. Also, the combat depth shouldn't really be affected by the movement style in this case. We have seen in the video that there are combos and supers and everything you would expect, its just up to the devs how the meta will play out and if they will skey towards veterans or newcomers.

There are combos in supers in the Naruto games too, though... And they switch from 2D and 3D in the same exact way. I'm not saying it can't be competive, it being Pokemon will make it extremely competitive whether people like it or not, but as far as the EVO scene and all that goes, it has a lot going against it by being the way it is.
That isn't to say that it won't be amazing, though. I'm near Zelda levels of excited for this. It easily beats out Splatoon for me. That said, Nintendo still needs a traditional 2D fighter, and it's clear that Pokken is not it. That's not a bad thing, maybe it's even a good thing, but it's a thing.
It makes me hope that Capcom makes a deal with Nintendo to make a Nintendo vs. Capcom game now that they lost the licence for Marvel vs. Capcom. They'd both make a LOT of money.
