From what I've watched, it basically allows for free movement when out of battle, but when up tight, it switches to 2D mode. This offers a fusion between the freedom of free movement and the precision of 2D fighters. I think its a pretty interesting system. Also, the combat depth shouldn't really be affected by the movement style in this case. We have seen in the video that there are combos and supers and everything you would expect, its just up to the devs how the meta will play out and if they will skey towards veterans or newcomers.
