Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft has done a lot of innovations

I am talking consoles here. I mean if I weren't then why would I bring up hard drives and online play? Come on man.

Let me be crystal clear to you, your thread title is "microsoft has done a lot of innovations", but using an existing idea, technology or solution on another platform, isn't innovation, it's repurposing existing technology, and thus, almost everything you are claiming is innovation, actually isn't.

You could melee in Doom.
Marathon (also by bungie) had no weapon cycling either
Tribes had shield recharging
Tribes and Deus Ex was the first with expansive environments, though some would argue levels of doom, hexen and duke nukem too.

None of this is innovation.

You need to just stop.

I am talking console FPS obviously. I am talking console innovations. Otherwise my point would even be more right cause guess who makes Windows? Microsoft.

Halo revolutionized the industry.

For Microsoft to have done something innovative, they had to have done it first. However, what MS did was not innovating, but popularizing what other companies already did years before the company threw its hat into the console ring. Throwing in Windows is largely irrelevent because had Mac OS, Unix, or Linux was the most popular operating system, then PC games would be developed for those OS's. However, I would not give Apple or the Linux distros credit because it's just more convenient and financially smarter to develop games for that particular OS.

All the things I mentioned were new to consoles, and significant (as in I am not throwing spaghetti on the wall). In fact many of what I listed are innovations even if you include PC. PC didn't have a unified online service like Xbox Live, or achievements, or Halo (at first).

Which console had hard drives standard first?

Which console had a service like Xbox Live first?

Which console had an ethernet port before XBox?

Which console had achievements before Xbox 360?

All done FIRST by Microsoft. And no, some dumb patches from 1976 don't equal achievements.

Mr McDonald let it go, you clearly spoke truth if the faithful have to work this hard to downplay your thread. MSFT has probably done the most for gaming over the last 10-15 years. Innovating and popularizing as someone said.

PC had gamespy arcade long before microsoft ever actually entered the console market, some of the features of gamespy:

  • Ability for users to have their own profiles .
  • Scanning a user’s hard disk for Arcade compatible games.
  • A basic web browser.
  • Voice Chat
  • Buddy Instant Messaging
  • Game Staging rooms
  • Dedicated Server browsing
  • User Rooms

"first to bring to console" isnt innovation, no matter how many times you tell yourself it is.

How's Games for Windows doing these days?

Which console had internal memory standard first?

Which console had a service like Xbox Live first? Sega

Which console had an internet connection (e.g. dial-up) port before XBox?

Which console had a rewards system before Xbox 360?

All popularized FIRST by Microsoft.

Tachikoma makes very good points and yet, you continue to ignore them. We're not here to hate on Microsoft, but to correct you. Microsoft should be given credit for popularizing certain aspects in video games. However, popularizing is not the same as innovating.

Asking someone else doesnt change the facts.

X68000

Dreamcast

Dreamcast / PS2

Atari (Activision titles) / Nintendo issued achievements / Nintendo power scoreboards

And yes, the patches do count.

I bet you if Sony thought of achievements first everyone would be all for them. Achievements are fun and addicting and a definite innovation.

Likewise, had they thought of them first, you wouldnt be calling it an innovation, would you?

So you think bringing something that already exists, to another playform, is innovation?, wow.
And you think a company developing a game for windows, makes it microsofts innovation?, double wow.
Tripple wow because Marathon was actually Mac only.

You sir, need a reality check.

While you try to call someone out why don't you educate yourself and learn the meaning of the word innovate. You do not have to create something to innovate, you can change the way it is done, a new method. Jokes on you, make sure you actually know what you are talking about next time.
