Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft has done a lot of innovations

As Tachi already mentioned:

- Atari already had achivements with Activision

X68000 was the first to have internal storage. Hard drives weren't a feasable option back in the day.

- Sega Dreamcast introduced the idea first. XBL popularized the idea.

- Halo was developed by Bungie. The credit, therefore, goes to Bungie. Also, games like Quake existed long before Halo.

Once again, you are saying the computer printer wasn't innovative cause of the Gutenberg printing press. And it's not even that. Achievements are totally different than the Atari stuff. And the X68000 isn't even a console nor did it use a hard drive. Wikipedia even emphasizes that it has no hard drive!

It seems more about hating on Microsoft than anything else.... Sony is known as "innovative" even though they have innovated pretty much nothing. Although the PS2 was the greatest console of all time, it was extremely anti-innovative.

The "hate" on Microsoft is your imagination. I and Tachikoma were merely correcting you on the use of the term, "innovation". And as stated already, hard drives weren't feasible back at the time. However, the gist was the same: internal memory.

Microsoft should be given credit for popularizing certain features in the video game industry. There's really no hate in that, is there? Why you bring Sony into this discussion is also puzzling as neither Tachi nor I claimed that Sony is innovative.

True or false: Microsoft Xbox was the first console to feature hard drives.

Yawn when you have to reach that hard, it's pretty sad to see.
-Who cares, atari was how old, and that means like 7 consoles skipped achievements and MSFT found a new method to bring them back, INNOVATION
-Your exact words, not feasible, therefore MSFT found a way to make it feasible., INNOVATION
-Yes Dreamcast had online, but MSFT created a dedicated service for console multiplayer, INNOVATION
-Halo was developed alongside MSFT, Bungie did not release the game on their own. Also Halo used MSFT's XBL service. 1st large scale multiplayer game on console. INNOVATION

You guys make this too easy.

Since OP and true_fan seem to be failing at it, i'll give them a hand.

Actual, genuine innovations introduced to the console market by Microsoft.

1) Key chain security for boot time per-console crypto decryption of low level boot environment.
2) Quick-release secondary connectors on controller cords to prevent damage when a cord is tugged from the console
3) Unified multi-device accounts system (xbox, xbox 360, xbox one)
4) Xbox 360 disk cryptology being burned to the drive rom (xbox 360)
5) Matching pair hardware (dvd drive needing the same key as the mainboards keychain to function) (xbox 360)
6) Sub level video stream encoder to overlay live data on a through-and-out hdmi stream without stripping hdmi security layer (xbox one)
7) ANA/HANA video encoder processors with 8bit depth substream upscaler (xbox 360)
8) Surge protection on AC module (xbox, and was actually implemented as a remedy to a large batch of xboxs having issues with unclean power and fluctuations in line flow)

There you go, 8 actual genuine xbox/microsoft innovations.
So will you stop pretending that mundane things like "first to have a game with a certain number of sales, in a certain genre, with certain feaures" is innovation?

Or how about this: Microsoft Xbox would be the first console to feature hard drives if using hard drives as internal memory was feasible long before the Xbox existed.

Exactly. If Sony had Halo then everyone would be all over that.

I like Sony, I think the PS2 is probably the greatest console of all time, but even though they were the console leaders they were terribly uninnovative. Without Microsoft entering the console race we'd probably be 6-7 years behind in terms of (console) gaming.

Actually, the X68000 had hard drives, the "super" version had two of them, too.

So, basically, this thread is about the idea that Microsoft created the universe?

Great, now the OP can just add these to the list he has already compiled.

Whether the PS3 had Halo, the credit would still go to Bungie...
