Gears Of War was made by Epic Games.

But without Microsoft it would have never been published or put on consoles.

Epic actually went to Sony first (or I think offered Sony an exclusive - something like that) and Sony denied them.

Gears Of War was in development for years, it was actually called Unreal Warfare back then during early development. The only reason it was exclusive to 360 was because Microsoft payed for it. It's as simple as that. If Microsoft didn't publish it, someone else would have on consoles.

Epic Games doesn't owe Microsoft for the success of the franchise. If you really think it wouldn't have been on consoles without Microsoft you.....I don't know. You're just wrong. Did you know that even Halo started off as a PC/Mac game before Microsoft bought the IP to put on the OG Xbox?

Achievements - Agreed. I think they are by far the best thing Microsoft has brought to gaming

Hard drives - Another incredibly important one, although considering the PS3 and Wii (I think) also had hard drives and were only a year later that may well have happened even without Microsoft.

Xbox Live - I miss local multiplayer

Halo - I think COD Modern Warfare did a lot more for FPS than Halo did. Yeah, but Halo paved the way for CoD. Before Halo, FPS as a genre just didn't exist on consoles, Rare had attempted it with 007 and Perfect Dark and that was pretty much it.

Gears of War - Microsoft may have funded it, but it was Epic's game.

WRPGs - The only thing I can think of here is getting Mass Effect as an exclusive. I think 3rd party companies did much more for WRPGs than Microsoft by far. Them becoming bigger than JRPGs too is because of 3rd parties (many Japanese companies forgetting how to make good games) I think he's referring to the fact that WRPG's were mainly a PC only genre before developers started putting them on Xbox. For instance Elder Scrolls, Xbox was the first console to get an Elder Scrolls game. The original Xbox also got KOTOR and Fable, which PS2 didn't get. Xbox 360 was also the first console to get a Witcher game and a Mass Effect game.

Other stuff - Kinect not really an innovation, PS Eyetoy? I don't think PS Eye Toy can even be compared to Kinect. Kinect was definitely an innovation in many ways, it didn't really do much good for gaming itself, but it's voice commands are definitely innovative for turning on your system and navigating to aps like Netflix.

Bolded

Cannot take you seriously when you bring up voice commands, kinect and innovation, something that is done with a 5 dollar mic..... really scrapping the bottom of the barrel in this thread, most MS brought to gaming was bad ideas, paywalls, timed DLC, timed exclusives, Parity clauses, underhanded practices. non of this existed before MS tried to buy there way to merket leader and failed.

A lot of people hate the Xbox and wish Microsoft never entered the gaming market, but look at what they've done for gaming:

- Achievements. First one to do achievements, brilliant innovation. Achievements give games lasting value to many people and also sold many games (I won't lie I have bought games just for the achievement points)

- Hard drive standard (except for a small percentage of 360 Core machines)

- Xbox Live. Seriously, the gold standard for online gaming. So many innovations - friends list, party chat, Xbox Live Arcade/Store, great matchamking, etc. etc. Compare it to the PS2's online! Now online gaming is probably the biggest part of gaming now, and Microsoft is the one that really pushed for it by including ONLY broadband for the Xbox instead of dialup (Sega's huge mistake)

- Halo. Halo was groundbreaking and super popular. Pretty much paved the way for the FPS generation. Even if you don't like it or its influence, you can't deny the facts. Some say Goldeneye was the game that did this but I think it was Halo 2 when the FPS era really took off. Not to mention Halo is the first $350 game ever (what I mean is most people bought an Xbox just to play Halo, the Halo box)

- Gears of War. A true killer app. The 360 needed one badly in 2006 and Gears of War also paved the way for many shooters last gen.

- It also helped promote WRPGs on consoles, which are now also a huge genre and bigger than JRPGs now

- Then there are other little innovations (albeit inevitable ones) like the guide button, dashboard, Kinect, etc. etc.

i hate microsoft because they made some precious jp games as console exclusives (like Ace Combat 6) and they continue doing it even now which really doesnt help them win the Jp market (god when are they going to give up) and these games would hardly do well outside jp but if these games were to release on PS then it would have sold a lot better. (captain obvious)

I'm not 100% sure but wasn't Halo going to be like a RTS game before M$ stepped in?

Really hate when these "innovation" threads pop up, because the term "innovation" gets stretched beyond its actual meaning and padded out with shit that just isnt innovation in an attempt to score points, and rarely does anyone actually check the facts of the innovations theyre claiming.

i agree this is the underlying problem with threads like these... people really like a company and therefore in their zeal to make that company seem like the best thing since sliced bread they want to make a massive list including anything they can mentioned that sounds good

that's why to this day people somehow still think that motion controls for example are innovative

with regards to the actual defninition stuff like online services and blu ray are actually innovative since they are all ubiquitous in terms of console gaming

there is no console that lacks these technologies and therefore they are a standard

Achievements are the worst thing Microsoft brought to gaming. Everything else, I agree with.

Honestly people like you make me laugh.  You don't HAVE to use them...

Yeah, I don't really get that attitude either. Why hate on something that can be pretty much completely hidden so you never even have to see?

Same as DLC IMO

Mr McDonald let it go, you clearly spoke truth if the faithful have to work this hard to downplay your thread. MSFT has probably done the most for gaming over the last 10-15 years. Innovating and popularizing as someone said.

microsoft has sold the least by a large margin in that time... so how could that make any sense?

Halo is not innovation, it's a masterpiece.
To compare with animu, Madoka is a masterpiece of the Magical Girl genre, because it combined the genre with a dark theme and elements from other genres never before associated with Magical Girl. It's a masterpiece because no other animu ever will be able to combine the same genres/themes and do something better, like there is no way another traditionnal FPS in a sci fi setting can be better than Halo.
