How do achievements influence gameplay for you?

They're a major selling point for me! 239 49.90%

I'll try to get lots of ... 56 11.69%

They're mostly good for ... 54 11.27%

I just ignore them for the most part. 89 18.58%

I wish games didn't have them. 40 8.35%

Total:478

You are not alone. I don't care about them at all. I turned my notifications off so I don't even know if I won a trophy, and I never check lists to see what trophies there are.
I understand people that like them and collect them, but I prefer to set my own goals.
I recently finished Far Cry 4 to a 100% (in game tracking) because I enjoyed the game, not because of trophies (I don't even know if there is a trophy for it).

All this dates all the way back to my first X360 game ever - GTA IV. I had no idea there are achievements and what they do. So I start playing - pop pop pop - achievements start unlocking. So I thought it is some kind of reward, I'll get something like a free hat or unlimited ammo or something....and when I found out it is just a number good for nothing, I turned off notifications then and never turned them on again...6 years and counting.

I don't give a crap about them

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I couldn't care less about them.

There are games that reward you for getting achievements though. Dead Rising, for example, unlocking certain achievements grant you in-game items.

I think they are great.

If most gamers are like me, then they will be able to relate with what I'm about to say.

When I play any game, there are certain challenges I subconsciously take upon myself. Only take head shots, use as few health packs as possible, finish the game on a harder difficulty, make then ultimate weapon, find all the hidden treasures, set the absolute best lap time....etc. I don't know why I do or play games like that, but I like to think its because if I'm enjoying a game I tend to want to challenge myself and beat the game the best way possible.

So if somehow there is a system built into my console that keeps track of all these things I would have done anyways, then by all means, in not gonna complain. I ignore grind related trophies though, but I pretty much always complete every challenge based trophy in the games I have. Or at least the ones I can do.

Before I accept any friend requests, I also take a peek at their trophy list, not only does it tell me what kinds games they play, it also tells me just how good they are. This is a fact. If going through someone's trophy list I see certain trophies from vanquish, wipeout demon's souls and certain other games...that person has my respect.

In the past, unless you directly know, saw or asked the person there was no way to know what kinda gamer they were. Now, its right there.

I also dont care about them

To me they are

useless
nonsensical
have no purpose than artificially lengthen a game
have no value whatsoever because I cant do anything with it
just make people compare their e-pen

To me they are just the remnants of the era of unlockables. You still get the message but you dont unlock anything because its sold to you as DLC.

ATTENTION!!!! IN MY OPINION (again OPINION) they are just for people that need ego boasting.

I do like oldschool unlockables tho like the "wall of unlockables in Smash Bros." you know "do X to unlock stage etc."  Or stuff like in Goldeneye 64 "do X to get DK Mode or paintball mode or all weapons etc."

I only care about them if I really like the game. In this case, it's an incentive to 100% the game. But in games I consider "okay" or "bad", I don't give a.sh... xD

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

At best, they are something I don't care about. At worst they are total immersion killers...I think if a game chooses to have an achievement system within the game, that is fine, but we don't need achievements in the majority of games. I don't need a reward for completing level one, and I don't want games to be saying "you should play the game like this if you want achievement".

I don't like them

I have a similar approach to gaming, except with a different outcome because I don't care about sharing any "achievements" with others. I would rather games just keep track of interesting stats, for example Burnout 2, TimeSplitters 2 and GTA III/VC/SA all kept a nice list of statistics.

As such I just ignore achievements/trophys for individual games... as a whole though would prefer if they didn't exist because many devs/publishers use them as a way to make it seem like there is more content. (if you take out the sharing scores aspect the only "reward" you are getting is a small string of text)

I agree. To me  playing Bayonetta and getting a gold silver or whatever medal every 4 minutes that artificially pauses / interrups my game killes the immersion for me.

Stuff like this should ALWAYS be optional and be turned off by default.

Deactivate it for the first playthrough.  Let playthrough 2 have that nonsense or let people who want that turn it on. (you know like in older games before the game starts  50hz or 60hz mode / progressive scan or interlaced mode.)
They should ask. Fun mode / work mode in games like Bayonetta before I reach the start screen.

I mean why the hell do I get a punishment when I want to enjoy the nice scenery the devs made for that specific game? Just because I was looking at a sunset for a minute or so I cant get the "best score" anymore rofl.

Also it feels like work. I dont play a game to have work.
