I think they are great.

If most gamers are like me, then they will be able to relate with what I'm about to say.

When I play any game, there are certain challenges I subconsciously take upon myself. Only take head shots, use as few health packs as possible, finish the game on a harder difficulty, make then ultimate weapon, find all the hidden treasures, set the absolute best lap time....etc. I don't know why I do or play games like that, but I like to think its because if I'm enjoying a game I tend to want to challenge myself and beat the game the best way possible.

So if somehow there is a system built into my console that keeps track of all these things I would have done anyways, then by all means, in not gonna complain. I ignore grind related trophies though, but I pretty much always complete every challenge based trophy in the games I have. Or at least the ones I can do.

Before I accept any friend requests, I also take a peek at their trophy list, not only does it tell me what kinds games they play, it also tells me just how good they are. This is a fact. If going through someone's trophy list I see certain trophies from vanquish, wipeout demon's souls and certain other games...that person has my respect.

In the past, unless you directly know, saw or asked the person there was no way to know what kinda gamer they were. Now, its right there.

I have a similar approach to gaming, except with a different outcome because I don't care about sharing any "achievements" with others. I would rather games just keep track of interesting stats, for example Burnout 2, TimeSplitters 2 and GTA III/VC/SA all kept a nice list of statistics.

As such I just ignore achievements/trophys for individual games... as a whole though would prefer if they didn't exist because many devs/publishers use them as a way to make it seem like there is more content. (if you take out the sharing scores aspect the only "reward" you are getting is a small string of text)
