Yeah please do! This thread plus the Japanese one are my favourite threads to follow on here 😊

And maybe soon you could do a WiiU u 2012/13 vs NX launch 😀

I still think the Wii U was overtracked here this year. I guess we'll see when NPD comes and Nintendo announces shipment totals pretty soon.

But why? The impact a new console announcement or unveiling has on the sales of current ones is very interesting, it happens to all consoles. NX news will make the comparison all the more relevant, in my opinion at least.

Also; good job on the OP!

Who would have thought this outcome would happen after Zelda got delayed and no price cut for the year? 218 units... now that's what I call a close shave. I hope no adjustments will spoil that result.

Any predictions about how next year will turn out? I believe 2016 will be up again (and NX not releasing until at least 2017), and due to increased baseline, much less floaty Japan sales and some nice games incoming during spring (we don't have any infos about what's coming after that as Nintendo got tired of "Please understand" delays, so they only announce them when they are almost done anymore) it will do better than the previous years until June at the very least.

First off, I predict that 2015 will be below 2014 once proper adjustments have been made after Nintendo's financial report.

Secondly, 2016 will be worse than 2015 because the Wii U will be on its last legs. NX will launch in the holidays 2016, making the year a whole lot worse than 2015 for the Wii U. The reason why we don't know more about upcoming Wii U games is not that Nintendo has switched to waiting until close to completion before announcing them, but rather that the pipeline is almost dry at this point in time. The games we do know about aren't going to generate much interest in the hardware, so there will hardly be any month where the Wii U will be up year over year. The console will slide into its grave in 2016. We'll use our amiibos to hammer the final nails into the coffin and turn our attention to NX.

I don't think Nintendo will release the NX already this year. Nintendo always showed their next console (well, mostly a mockup thereof, but still) around 1 year and a half in advance, be it Wii U, Wii or Gamecube. This hasn't happened yet. Also, Nintendo just said they won't rush the system out, so I really wonder why sobmany are still hellbent on a 2016 release.

@bolded: Oh, so you know what else is coming this year which hasn't been announced yet?

He was talking about the games we ALREADY know. And he's right, unless Zelda turns out to be groundbreaking and awesome (not gonna happen). And as he said, there likely are no other games coming out but the we already know.

However, if NX releases and Wii U gets a big pricecut, I could see the sales numbers shooting high with the 199 pricepoint, as that's what the console is worth.

The 3DS was first shown at E3 2010 and launched in February 2011. Given that there is no advantage in having a 1.5 year long gap between reveal and launch, there's no good reason why Nintendo shouldn't change the timing this time around. The gap between reveal and launch certainly didn't help the Wii U because Sony and Microsoft had plenty of time to downplay everything. As for the games, the release schedule of the past and the upcoming months for both the Wii U and 3DS should serve as a good hint that at this point all Nintendo is doing is bridging the gap until their new hardware launches.

There are doubts about the exact meaning of Kimishima's recent statements because the translation was questionable. But more importantly, the available pieces of information point towards a 2016 launch:

1. NX will have a (for the most part) shared library and different form factors for the hardware.
2. The 3DS is already five years old and in need of a successor.
3. The Wii U is far from a healthy platform and should be replaced rather sooner than later.
4. The current release schedules for both systems are largely devoid of EAD games and those are the first teams that make software for new hardware.

If NX launches in 2017, then only because Nintendo couldn't get it ready as planned.

Don't forget that in May 2014 Iwata said that they would revolutionize gaming in about two years, that is a pretty damn good sign that new hardware is releasing in 2016.

And the situation is a little different this time, so Nintendo haven't had the need to show it early to generate hype. What Kimishima said about not needing to rush means that there's no competition this time launching in the same window. When you look at the past decade or so, DS had to ship, be it ready or not, because of the PSP. Wii had to release at the same time with PS3. 3DS was likely set to kill the Vita and likewise Wii U to kill PS4, by forcing to Sony to rush the console out with no games and taking losses once again.

By looking at your avatar, I'd say the state of the games industry makes you just about as grumpy as I am. Btw, got Wii U for christmas.

They probably could have shown the NX last year, but then what? Wii U sales are so shitty they would've cratered and 3DS handheld shipments are Nintendo's lowest in like 15+ years ... so they can't afford for those to go any lower either.

There was literally zero benefit for Nintendo showing the NX last year, the only thing it would have accoplished is hurting what's left of the Wii U/3DS' likely last full holiday season.

Nintendo announced the N64 just two years into the SNES life cycle too ... lol ... things change, you can't keep operating the same way forever.

That's irrelevant. Nothing stops a system from being unveiled and released the same year. The past doesn't matter.
