Hard to say, if the PS4 manages to maintain the momentum and not drop off like the Wii did and continue to sell fairly well after the 9th gen started then it could have a chance, but who knows.

I don't think it will happen and I'll give you a few reasons.

-Japan: I highly doubt the PS4 will be anywhere close to reaching PS2 sales. It's a shrinking market for home consoles.

-North America: PS2 outsold the original Xbox by a pretty significant margin (~53.5m to ~16m) . I don't see the PS4 being able to outsell the Xbox One by that margin or ratio in this generation.

I doubt it. Gaming was cheaper in those days and Sony came from kicking everything's ass with the PS1. It was the console brand to beat. Fast forward to the PS3 and 7th gen and Sony stumbled big time, lost a lot of ground to both Nintendo and MS.

Granted, the PS4 is sweeping up hard but I still don't think it will reach that level. I don't think any HOME console will get that far ever again.

Not even close, PS2 barely had competition.. realisticly.

Which helped with marketing too, you saw PS2 controllers on ads, not xbox controllers, not nintendo's controllers.

PS4 has formidable competition in Xb1 and wii u to a much lesser extent.

No!If you outpacing a console doesn't mean that you will outsell it,same thing if you're below a console doesn't mean that you won't outsell it!Wii was killing ps2 in its first years,did wii outsell it?
Your prediction automatically implies that xbone will outsell xbox360 as it outpaces it,but probably it will sell the half of xbox360 sales,it just selling fast and compares to xbox360 first years that were mediocre!These comparisons doesn't mean anything,there are many paradigms for that!
PS4 can't be the leg beast that ps2 was,ps2 had a successor that was anemic in its first years,leaving it the space to keep growing!See what ps4 is doing to ps3,after its release made ps3 to decline heavily,so ps5 won't leave the space to ps4 to grow any further!
Lastly,ps2 sold almost 26m in Japan,given the current situation of the console market in Japan it would be lucky to sell 5m there,so cut 21m,the other thing is the xb1 competition in USA and the market shrinkage(It is returning to the levels of 6th gen) but currently we can see it as ps4 and xb1 selling fast!So ps4 isn't able to outsell ps2 in my opinion!

alright this is going to make me sound like a fanboy but it needs to be said considering a lot of people think that xbox one is competition. it took xbox one dropping the price three times in less than a year ($400, $350, $329 on black friday) with two $60 and $30 games in some cases more than two games with a $50 gift card, a custom call of duty xbox one, a white sunset overdrive xbox one, and four halo games for $60 with a beta to halo 5 to outsell the ps4 in their strongest territory for one or two months. the xbox one was selling for about the same price as a ps3. before the holidays it occasionally got outsold by the wii u. i don't see xbox one being competition.
